As children move through the educational system they pass several notable milestones, moving from elementary to middle school, then to high school and beyond. These milestones, or transitions, represent opportunities for student growth but they also are periods of disruption in the lives of developing children. Research in a number of venues using a variety of methods describes these transitions as having a significant impact on a majority of students. Some students adapt easily to these new situations yet others struggle, and in many cases seem never to recover from the setback. The first of these "normative" transitions takes place between elementary school and middle school, this study investigates the factors that affect normative school transitions as it applies to the move to middle school. To determine what factors may affect how students transition to middle school, this study relies on general sociological theories and current research in neighborhood and school effects, and utilizes a three level Hierarchical Linear Model (HLM) method of data analysis. A rich dataset from the Dallas Independent School District is used in a longitudinal study of three cohorts of approximately 12,000 students each. These students were enrolled in 28 middle schools, and had transitioned from 154 elementary schools.

Social factors surrounding critical transition periods, school and class size, and grade configuration at the elementary level greatly impact current and future student performance. The expectation is that all of these factors are standard among schools, but in reality, every school is different; therefore, the potential for inconsistent quality of learning exists. This causal-comparative study explored the difference etween school size, grade span configuration, and transitions associated with a district’s seven elementary feeder schools in a small county in rural Western North Carolina. Differences in student performance, in both reading and math, at the elementary, middle, and high school level, as well as graduation rates, were examined for ties to the identified feeder school. The elements of teacher quality, teacher turnover, and principal turnover were explored as potential variables in student performance. An ex-post facto statistical analysis utilizing t-tests provided an exploration of feeder school characteristics and which feeder schools are more likely to produce successful academic achievement and graduation from high school. The data analysis revealed no statistically significant difference among students who experienced fewer transitions in their school career in regard to reading performance. However, the students who attended a Pre-K through grade eight school had higher mean scores in math than the students who attended a Pre-K through grade five school. Although no statistically significant difference was found between the school configuration and successful graduation, it was noted that students who did not attend any elementary school in the district had a much higher dropout rate.

The purpose of the study is to examine the perceptions of students, teachers and parents regarding the transition from elementary to middle school. Research was conducted using a sequential mixed methods approach to examine the perceptions and attitudes of key stakeholders involved in the transition process. A purposeful sample of 6th grade students, parents, and teachers from four middle schools located in a large suburban school district in Southeastern Texas participated in both a survey and focus group interviews. This study investigated the academic, procedural, and social factors that occur in middle school and their influence on the students’ transition process. Analysis was conducted on responses from perception surveys and interviews conducted with students, teachers and parents. The theoretical frameworks used as a basis for this study include both the Stage Fit Environment Theory and Social Bonding Theory. Findings appear to be mixed across stakeholders. Findings related to academic factors from students, teachers, and parents indicated Positive perceptions on most factors including being able to choose some classes, having new teachers, getting good grades, and changing classes. Varied responses were reflected from students, teachers, and parents from the four campuses about pressure to do well, harder classes, and how much homework students are assigned. Responses related to procedural factors showed mostly Positive perceptions from students, teachers, and parents pertaining to being in a larger school, more freedom, older students, more choices at lunch, and new rules and expectations. In slight contrast, stakeholders responded either Positive or Neither Neutral nor Positive about having lockers, using lockers, and riding the bus. Students, teachers, and parents were divided on perceptions related to finding their way around or getting lost, and getting to class on time. Social factors were responded to Positively by stakeholders related to making new friends, participating in sports, clubs, and etc., attending school events, getting along with other students, new and more students, and fitting in. Negative perceptions were reflected about being made fun of, and safety and being hurt by others by most students, teachers, and parents. Variations in responses were observed about feeling pressure to do well by all stakeholder with both Negative and Neither Negative nor Positive perceptions reflected.

This case study takes an in-depth look at what type of students transition from elementary to middle school 21st Century Community Learning Center programs. Using binary logistic regressions, I identify key characteristics that predict whether or not a student will continue to attend the program after they transition to a new school and then discuss how to improve the attendance of after-school programs. Moreover, this case study also identifies how different school program environments serve different types of students in two cohorts starting in fifth grade. Middle school context moderates the effects of other variables that are predictive of participation in after-school programs during middle school. Thus, I demonstrate how understanding who makes successful transitions in the after-school program can help improve the sustainability and effectiveness of these programs.

The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine what effect transition had on discipline outcomes when fourth grade elementary students transition to middle school as fifth grade students. The study used descriptive statistics, statistical analysis, and variations of percentages to analyze discipline data from a class of fourth grade elementary students of a suburban Houston school district. The study showed a 72.36% increase in discipline events post transition when compared to the same class's discipline data the next year at a five/six middle school. Additionally, the study identified "repeated/persistent misbehavior", "class rules violation", and "excessive tardies" as the most frequent discipline issues that occurred during the students' fifth grade transition year. Lastly, this study identified physical, emotional, academic, and social development as key points for administrators to consider in improving future classes' discipline performance in the fifth grade, both pre and post transition.

Decades of research have shown a normative decline in academic performance to be associated with the transition from elementary school to middle school. Based on the idea that these difficulties stem from a lack of relevant coping skills, the current study focused on the preventive effects of a three-year social and emotional learning (SEL) program in mitigating transitional achievement loss. Quality of implementation, a crucial, but often overlooked, factor in program evaluation, is the framework through which students' intervention experiences were defined. In each intervention year, implementation was assessed through teacher-reported curriculum fidelity and teacher's perception of program quality. These factors were tested as predictors of changes in GPA and standardized test scores across the transition. Intervention dosage received over the fifth grade year emerged as a significant predictor of GPA change. Dosage was unrelated to standardized test change, though differences between genders and ethnic groups in transitional standardized test performance were found. Teachers' ratings of program effectiveness were also unrelated to outcome, but were associated with intervention dosage.

School transition is a life changing event for children - they are rarely faced with such a powerful set of personal and social changes. These underpin the immediate and longer term wellbeing of children, peer groups, teachers and schools. Understanding School Transition provides a most comprehensive, international review of this important area, complete with practical advice on what practitioners can do to support children’s wellbeing, motivation and achievement. Offering an accessible introduction to children’s psychology at transition, Understanding School Transition explores transition as a status passage, what we really mean by wellbeing, and the ways in which children adapt to new environments. Key chapters focus on: Understanding stress and anxiety Children’s hopes, fears and myths at transition Parents’ and teachers’ influence and role Children’s relationships with peers as they change schools Children’s personal and collective identities Motivation, engagement and achievement Supporting the most vulnerable children Crucially, it advises how you can help children through implementing transition interventions and evaluating their success in your own school. Illustrated by case studies of experiences in real schools, Understanding School Transition will be essential reading for all training and practising teachers, as well as transition and subject specialists, who want to better understand and influence what happens to children at this critical stage.
