Household poverty is dynamic and characterized in terms of spells. Through the recurrence and persistence of spells, exposure to poverty accumulates. In Nigeria, there are evidences of increasing incidences of child labour with a link to household poverty, but studies on this have been very limited. This study therefore aimed to examine various household factors pre-disposing children to different forms of labour in Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria. A total of 110 respondents comprising of children involved in various forms of labour and their households were selected for interview using a purposive random sampling technique. Participatory methodologies including interviews, focus-group discussions (FGD) and in-depth interviews (IDI) were used to gather relevant data and share information on child labour in the study site. Findings from the study suggest the usefulness of some theoretical considerations on the incidence of child labour. The Household Production Theory and the Ideological Paradigm among others are useful theories in explaining the social, economic and cultural ramifications and household context of child labour in Nigeria. The findings indicate that household poverty and some community variables are significantly and positively related to child activity options. Specifically, the age of the child, gender, household composition, education of parents and parents' income determine child activity options. Based on these findings, it is recommended that the Poverty Alleviation Programmes in the country meant to lift poor households out of poverty should be better implemented so that their financial burdens will be greatly reduced. Additionally, awareness campaigns on the cost of child labour should be given priority at the Local, State and the National levels.

Children throughout the world are engaged in a great number of activities classifiable as work. These range from relatively harmless, even laudable, activities like helping parents in their domestic chores, to morally and physically dangerous ones like soldiering and prostitution. If we leave out the former, we are left with what are generally called "economic" activities. Only a small minority, less than 4 percent of all working children, are estimated to be engaged in what ILO defines as the "unconditional" worst forms of child labour. The absolute number of children estimated to be engaged in the latter is, however, a stunning 8.4 million. Should we only be concerned about the worst forms of child labour? Most forms of child labour other than the worst ones have valuable learning-by-doing elements. Furthermore, child labour produces current income. If the family is credit rationed, child labour relaxes the liquidity constraint and increases current consumption. There is thus a trade-off between present and future consumption. To the extent that current consumption has a positive effect on future health (hence, on the child's future earning capacity and, more generally, utility), this trade-off may be lower than one might think. This book provides a blend of theory, empirical analysis and policy discussion. The first three chapters develop a fairly comprehensive theory of child labour, and related variables such as fertility, and infant mortality. Chapter 4, concerned with the effects of trade, contains both theory and cross-country empirical evidence. The remaining chapters are country studies, aimed at illustrating and testing different aspects of the theory in different geographical contexts. These chapters apply the latest developments in microeconometric methodology for dealing with endogeneity, unobserved heterogeneity, and the evaluation of public intervention.

The purpose of the FAO’s framework is to guide the Organization and its personnel in the integration of measures addressing child labour within FAO’s typical work, programmes and initiatives at global, regional and country levels. It aims to enhance compliance with organization’s operational standards, and strengthen coherence and synergies across the Organization and with partners. The FAO framework is primarily targeted at FAO as an organization, including all personnel in all geographic locations. But the framework is also relevant for FAO’s governing bodies and Member States, and provides guidance and a basis for collaboration with development partners. The framework is also to be used as a key guidance to assess and monitor compliance with FAO’s environmental and social standards addressing prevention and reduction of child labour in FAO’s programming.

Household survey data collected primarily from rural Bangladesh (Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey 2005-2006) is utilized in this paper to identify the important individual, household and district-level factors that influence the decision making process that parents undertake to determine their children's (between the age of 7 and 14 inclusive) absence rate from school and work intensity. Bivariate Tobit model is used to jointly estimate the absence rate and hours worked equations. The results of the analysis conducted in this paper suggest that an increase in perceived returns on human capital from attending school -- as measured by the wage differential between low-skilled and higher-skilled occupations in a given market -- negatively impact absence rate in rural Bangladesh. Moreover, results suggest that the education level of the parents has an impact on a child's absence rate and the number of hours worked in a week.

The field of development economics has evolved since volume 3 of the Handbook of Development Economics was published more than a decade ago. Volume 4 takes stock of some of the newer trends and their implications for research in the field and our understanding of economic development. The handbook is divided into four sections which reflect these developments, of which the first deals with agricultural and rural development. Section two is concerned with developments in the theory and evidence regarding public goods and political economy. The third section is focused on the behavior of households and individuals regarding various aspects of human capital investments, in the face of the various constraints, particularly market incentives and public goods. The final section contains papers that describe the different methods now available, both experimental and non-experimental, to conduct program evaluations, as well as describing papers that implement these methods. The authors of the chapters are all experts in the fields they survey and extend, and this volume promises to be an invaluable addition to the Handbooks in Economics series and a useful reference to graduate students, researchers and professionals in the field of development economics. Presents an accurate, self-contained survey of the current state of the field Summarizes the most recent discussions in journals, and elucidates new developments Although original material is also included, the main aim is the provision of comprehensive and accessible surveys
