Enrollment in independent schools in the U.S. has been in decline for 15 years. Faith-based schools have experienced more significant decline than non-religious schools. School leaders have been struggling to find solutions to prevent further enrollment loss and to promote future growth. The purpose of this study was to explore the reasons parents decide to enroll their children in a faith-based schools. According to the literature, factors associated with national enrollment decline include economic challenges, declining religiosity, increased competition, maturing of business cycle, rising tuition, poor marketing, and generational changes in parental values related to schooling. To explore these and other factors of parent choices related to enrollment, I conducted a quantitative study and developed a survey to investigate criteria for enrollment decisions, enrollment satisfaction, perceptions for schooling options, the impact of religiosity, perceptions related to tuition and school value, and various demographic factors. The study revealed several key findings including the discovery of an enrollment decision scale and an enrollment satisfaction scale, both consisting of 17 enrollment factors. Parent religiosity was found to have a significant impact on enrollment decisions. Also, parent satisfaction correlated with the likelihood of a parent recommending the school. The study also revealed two enrollment decision correlational models: the satisfaction model and the promoter model. These models may help create a predictive model for enrollment decisions and answers to leaders searching for solutions to enrollment challenges.

The purpose of this study was to identify and examine factors that predict the financial health across three time frames of K-12 Christian schools that have a connection with the churches of Christ. Factors studied include organizational age, student enrollment, program service revenues, administrative expenses, employment expenses, endowment funds, and unrestricted net assets. Data was collected from Internal Revenue Service Form 990 Return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax and the National Center for Education Statistics Private School Universe Survey for years 2013 through 2017. This study will provide financial benchmarks that K-12 Christian school leaders can use to assess their school’s financial health in relation to similar schools. In addition, this study may assist in simplifying financial analysis procedures for school leaders who do not have expertise in finance but still have a significant role in the financial management of their organization.

This study was conducted to advance knowledge by examining the reasons that motivate teachers to participate in professional development and the relationship to teacher job satisfaction and retention in Christian-based K-12 Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) member schools. The study contributes to the literature in the field because of very limited research on Christian-based schools, especially with regards to professional development, job satisfaction and retention. The study was a quantitative, non-experimental, correlational research design using two instruments, i.e., the Participation Reasons Scale (PRS) and the Job Satisfaction/Retention/Demographic Survey. The PRS scores indicated that the motivating factors for teachers to participate in professional development in rank order were: (a) professional commitment and reflection; (b) professional improvement; (c) personal benefits; (d) professional service; and (e) collegial learning. However, the PRS results did not reveal a significant correlation to job satisfaction or retention. In addition, the data related to on-line versus face-to-face delivery format, gender, marital status, age, level of education, years in education, and years in K-12 do not predict teacher participation in professional development opportunities.

The purpose of this study was to determine if any predictive effects existed between gender, religious affiliation (church of Christ versus non-church of Christ), academic achievement measured by GPA, longevity measured by years, and college readiness measured by ACT composite scores on academic, social, faculty, and spiritual satisfaction for 12th grade students in four private, Christian schools in Arkansas. This study determined the accuracy of predictor variables in explaining the criterion variables. It also provided an indicator of the percentage of variance on the criterion variables explained by predictor variables and showed how well they explained the varience. It was discovered that gender and religious affiliation were notable predictor variables compared to GPA, longevity, and ACT scores. A quantitative, nonexperimental, strategy using regression analysis was used in this study of students in four private, Christian schools associated with the churches of Christ. Twelfth grade students in these four schools who had taken the High School Satisfaction Questionnaire in the Spring of 2013 comprised the sample for this study. This sample included 183 students, both male and female--primarily Caucasian--from rural and urban areas across Arkansas. Gender, religious affiliation, academic achievement measured by GPA, longevity measured by years, and college readiness measured by ACT composite scores served as independent variables. The measure of satisfaction expressed was academic, social, faculty, and spiritual which represented the dependent variables. Although the overall model significantly predicted academic, social, and spiritual satisfaction, it did not significantly predict faculty satisfaction.

Nearly the whole of America’s partisan politics centers on a single question: Can markets solve our social problems? And for years this question has played out ferociously in the debates about how we should educate our children. From the growth of vouchers and charter schools to the implementation of No Child Left Behind, policy makers have increasingly turned to market-based models to help improve our schools, believing that private institutions—because they are competitively driven—are better than public ones. With The Public School Advantage, Christopher A. and Sarah Theule Lubienski offer powerful evidence to undercut this belief, showing that public schools in fact outperform private ones. For decades research showing that students at private schools perform better than students at public ones has been used to promote the benefits of the private sector in education, including vouchers and charter schools—but much of these data are now nearly half a century old. Drawing on two recent, large-scale, and nationally representative databases, the Lubienskis show that any benefit seen in private school performance now is more than explained by demographics. Private schools have higher scores not because they are better institutions but because their students largely come from more privileged backgrounds that offer greater educational support. After correcting for demographics, the Lubienskis go on to show that gains in student achievement at public schools are at least as great and often greater than those at private ones. Even more surprising, they show that the very mechanism that market-based reformers champion—autonomy—may be the crucial factor that prevents private schools from performing better. Alternatively, those practices that these reformers castigate, such as teacher certification and professional reforms of curriculum and instruction, turn out to have a significant effect on school improvement.
