Nel romanzo, tutto ruota intorno alla figura di Modesta: una donna vitale e scomoda, potentemente immorale secondo la morale comune. Una donna siciliana, una « carusa tosta » in cui si fondono carnalità e intelletto, che attraversa bufere storiche e tempeste sentimentali protetta da un infallibile talismano interiore : « l'arte della gioia ». Modesta nasce il primo gennaio del 1900 in una casa povera, in una terra ancora piú povera. Ma fin dall'inizio è consapevole, con il corpo e con la mente, di essere destinata a una vita che va ben oltre i confini del suo villaggio e della sua condizione. Ancora ragazzina è mandata in un convento e da lí, alla morte della madre superiora che la proteggeva, in un palazzo di nobili. Qui, il suo enorme talento e la sua intelligenza machiavellica le permettono di controllare i cordoni della borsa di casa, e di convertirsi in aristocratica attraverso un matrimonio di convenienza. Tutto ciò senza mai smettere di sedurre uomini e donne di ogni tipo.
