World-renowned safety culture expert Professor Andrew Hopkins discusses the causes of a major explosion that occurred at the BP Texas City Refinery on 23 March 2005. The explosion killed 15 workers and injured more than 170 others.Failure to Learn also analyses the similarities between this even and the Longford gas plant explosion in Victoria in 1998, the latter of which is featured in his earlier book, Lessons from Longford.Hopkins poses questions such as: How can companies better design themselves to manage major hazards? Who was blamed for the explosion? What were the real causes? Why had the lessons not been learnt from earlier incidents at Longford and elsewhere?Hopkins received the 2008 European Process Safety Centre Award for extraordinary contribution to process safety, making this the first time the prize was awarded to someone who is based outside of Europe.Failure to Learn is insightfully written and is an essential reference for all OHS professionals.Other titles by Hopkins available through FutureMedia: Nightmare pipeline failures Disastrous Decisions Failure to Learn: BP Texas City Refinery Disaster Learning from High Reliability Organisations Lessons from Gretley: Mindful Leadership and the LawLessons from Longford: the Esso Gas Plant Explosion Safety, Culture and RiskFor more information on FutureMedia products and services, visit www.futuremedia.com.au or www.processsafety.com.au

Learning Chinese can be frustrating and difficult, partly because it's very different from European languages. Following a teacher, textbook or language course is not enough. They show you the characters, words and grammar you need to become proficient in Chinese, but they don't teach you how to learn them! Regardless of what program you're in (if any), you need to take responsibility for your own learning. If you don't, you will miss many important things that aren't included in the course you're taking. If you study on your own, you need to be even more aware of what you need to do, what you're doing at the moment and the difference between them. Here are some of the questions I have asked and have since been asked many times by students: How do I learn characters efficiently? How do I get the most out of my course or teacher? Which are the best learning tools and resources? How can I become fluent in Mandarin? How can I improve my pronunciation? How do I learn successfully on my own? How can I motivate myself to study more? How can I fit learning Chinese into a busy schedule? The answers I've found to these questions and many others form the core of this book. It took eight years of learning, researching, teaching and writing to figure these things out. Not everybody has the time to do that! I can't go back in time and help myself learn in a better way, but I can help you! This book is meant for normal students and independent language learners alike. While it covers all major areas of learning, you won't learn Chinese just by reading this book. It's like when someone on TV teaches you how to cook: you won't get to eat the delicious dish just by watching the program; you have to do the cooking yourself. That's true for this book as well. When you apply what you learn, it will boost your learning, making every hour you spend count for more, but you still have to do the learning yourself. This is what a few readers have said about the book: "The book had me nodding at a heap of things I'd learnt the hard way, wishing I knew them when I started, as well as highlighting areas that I'm currently missing in my study." - Geoff van der Meer, VP engineering "This publication is like a bible for anyone serious about Chinese proficiency. It's easy for anyone to read and written with scientific precision." - Zachary Danz, foreign teacher, children's theatre artist About me I started learning Chinese when I was 23 (that's more than eight years ago now) and have since studied in many different situations, including serious immersion programs abroad, high-intensity programs in Sweden, online courses, as well as on the side while working or studying other things. I have also successfully used my Chinese in a graduate program for teaching Chinese as a second language, taught entirely in Chinese mostly for native speakers (the Graduate Institute for Teaching Chinese as a Second Language at National Taiwan Normal University). All these parts have contributed to my website, Hacking Chinese, where I write regularly about how to learn Mandarin.

Water Margin (水浒传), one of the four Chinese classics (四大名著), is a chapter-style (章回体) novel compiled by Shi Nai'an (施耐庵) in the late Yuan and early Ming Dynasty (元末明初). The 14th-century Chinese novel, also known as Outlaws of the Marsh/Shuihuzhuan, mainly describes the story of 108 bandit-heroes, headed by Song Jiang (宋江), gathered in Liangshan, Shandong (山东梁山) in the late Northern Song Dynasty (北宋末年). Through the description of the grand story of Liangshan heroes resisting oppression, their growth and various campaigns, recruitment of heroes by the Song Dynasty, and the grand narrative of the final demise of the Song Dynasty, the Chinese literary masterpiece artistically reflects the whole process of the Songjiang Uprising (宋江起义) in Chinese history from its occurrence, development to failure. The novel profoundly reveals the social roots of the uprising, enthusiastically praises the resistance struggle of the heroes of the uprising and their social ideals, and also categorically describes the inherent historical reasons for the failure of the uprising. "Water Margin" is one of the four great Chinese classical novels. After it came out, it had a huge social impact and became a model of Chinese novel creation in the later generations. In Chinese history (中国历史), "Water Margin" is one of the first chapter-style stories written in the vernacular (白话文), rather than Classical Chinese (古文). It is also one of the works with epic characteristics in Chinese language and literature. It has a profound influence on narrative literature in China and even East Asia. As such, the novel is well-known in China. No wonder, if you are learning Mandarin Chinese language, you are highly recommended to appreciate this literary masterpiece. Kindle Edition: www.amazon.com/dp/B08FDML26V Paperback Edition: www.amazon.com/dp/B08F6TF99X The book has 10 chapters in the following order (pay attention to the name of the heroes (e.g. 宋江) and their nicknames (e.g. 及时雨)): Chapter 1: Song Jiang (第一章:及时雨宋江) Chapter 2: Lin Chong (第二章:豹子头林冲) Chapter 3: Lu Zhishen (第三章:花和尚鲁智深) Chapter 4: Wu Yong (第四章:智多星吴用) Chapter 5: Lu Junyi (第五章:玉麒麟卢俊义) Chapter 6: Wu Song (第六章:行者武松) Chapter 7: Li Kui (第七章:黑旋风李逵) Chapter 8: Shi Xiu (第八章:拼命三郎石秀) Chapter 9: Qin Ming (第九章:霹雳火秦明) Chapter 10: Yang Zhi (第十章:青面兽杨志) The current book volume, China's Great Classical Novels 3, is a Level 6 Chinese reading practice book. It would introduce you to the famous Chinese novel Water Margin (simplified edition). The 3rd volume in the Classical Novels of Chinese Literature (中国古典文学) series includes both the Chinese text (simplified characters) and pinyin Romanization. With about over 1300 unique Chinese characters, the volume would be suitable for the lower intermediate and advanced level Chinese language learners (HSK 3-6). Overall, the reading series offers you a variety of elementary level books (Level 1/2/3/4/5/6) to understand China as well as practice Chinese reading fast.
