1945 est l'année de la création de l'office national d'immigration (ONI), qui gérera et régulera la venue de millions de travailleurs immigrés à qui l'on fait appel pour répondre aux besoins de la reconstruction. La période des Trente Glorieuses et du plein emploi est celle qui, malgré les décolonisations, voit s'installer durablement en France les travailleurs des anciennes colonies. Avec la récession des années soixante-dix, l'immigration est officiellement interrompue en 1974. L'accentuation de la crise économique dans les années quatre-vingt amène le durcissement des lois concernant le séjour et le travail des travailleurs immigrés et de leur famille, ainsi que des conditions du droit d'asile. Ceux qui composent ce que l'on appelle la deuxième génération cherchent leur place dans la société française à travers des mouvements, comme la Marche des Beurs, qui marqueront les années quatre-vingt. Face à la montée du nationalisme et de la xénophobie, ils se battent contre le racisme, pour l'égalité de droits et contre la réforme du code de la nationalité. En février 1997, un mouvement citoyen sans précédent se mobilise autour de la lutte des sans-papiers de l'église Saint-Bernard, répondant aux lois Debré. Dès son accession au pouvoir en 1997, le nouveau gouvernement socialiste s'engage vers la régularisation de certaines catégories de sans-papiers et l'abolition des lois Debré et Pasqua. Le " problème " de l'immigration, et en particulier de l'immigration clandestine, a été et est toujours au cœur des débats de société et politiques depuis maintenant deux décennies. Le rôle et la place des immigrés et de leurs descendants dans la société française reste en enjeu pour tous ses membres. Au terme d'un peu plus d'un siècle d'immigrations en France, peut-on enfin espérer leur reconnaissance ?
