Recently considerable interest has developed about the degree to which anthropological approaches to kinship can be used for the study of the long-term development of European history. From the late middle ages to the dawn of the twentieth century, kinship - rather than declining, as is often assumed - was twice reconfigured in dramatic ways and became increasingly significant as a force in historical change, with remarkable similarities across European society. Applying interdisciplinary approaches from social and cultural history and literature and focusing on sibling relationships, this volume takes up the challenge of examining the systemic and structural development of kinship over the long term by looking at the close inner-familial dynamics of ruling families (the Hohenzollerns), cultural leaders (the Mendelssohns), business and professional classes, and political figures (the Gladstones)in France, Italy, Germany, and England. Länder - Mittelalter, Frühe Neuzeit, Note: 1.0, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Veranstaltung: Grundstufenseminar, 10 Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Der erste Teil der Arbeit beschäftigt sich daher mit der Hausgemeinschaft als Personenverband und soll zum einen die Grundstrukturen einer mittelalterlichen Hausgemeinschaft darlegen und zum anderen diejenigen Bereiche näher beleuchten, die von ihrer Struktur her der Hausgemeinschaft ähnlich sind (z.B. Grundherrschaften). Weiterhin ist es hier unbedingt notwendig, die Kleinfamilie im modernen Sinne als Keimzelle jeder Hausgemeinschaft näher zu betrachten sowie die unterschiedlichen Bedeutungen des Begriffes "familia" zu entschlüsseln, der mit dem modernen Begriff Familie nur wenig zu tun hat. Der zweite Teil der Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, inwieweit Haus und Hof als Keimzellen der mittelalterlichen Gesellschaft den Menschen zumindest ein Mindestmaß an Sicherheit und Frieden in einer bedrohlichen Umwelt garantieren konnten. Es soll vor allem die Frage geklärt werden, wie traditionelle Mechanismen des Selbstschutzes (eigenverantwortliche Verteidigung der Hausgemeinschaft durch den bewaffneten Hausherrn; Aufrechterhaltung der inneren Ordnung) und äußere Ordnungsprinzipien in Form von gewohnheitsrechtlichen und allgemeingültigen Regeln und tatsächlichen Strafandrohungen zusammenwirkten, um den Friedensbereich Haus und Hof aufrechterhalten zu können. Außerdem soll auf die sakrale Erhöhung des Hauses durch teils archaische Riten (z.B. Bauopfer) und eher christlich geprägte Mythologiesierungen (z.B. ehestiftende Aspekte der Herdfeuerentzündung) hingewiesen werden, die die wichtige Rolle von Haus und Hof im mittelalterlichen Leben sehr deutlich werden lassen. Im dritten Teil schließlich soll das Verhältnis zwischen Haus und Herrschaft, das in der Mediävistik eine bedeutende Rolle spielt, dargestellt werden. Besonders die Auseinandersetzung um die Rolle der Hausherrschaft bei der Herausbildung anderer mittelalterlichen Herrschaftsformen, die zwischen Historikern wie Brunner, Bosl und Schlesinger auf der einen Seite und deren Kritiker Karl Kroeschell auf der andren Seite geführt wurde (und die nach Meinung des Autors dieser Arbeit keineswegs in befriedigender Weise zu Ende geführt wurde), soll dabei erarbeitet werden. Dabei muß darauf hingewiesen werden, daß die größtenteils auf der wortgeschichtlichen Ebene geführte Diskussion hier unerwähnt bleibt, weil der Autor sich nicht in der Lage fühlt, der philologischen Argumentationslinie folgen zu können, vielmehr sollen die Ergebnisse in den Vordergrund gestellt werden.

Since the publication of Philippe Ariès’s book, Centuries of Childhood, in the early 1960s, there has been great interest among historians in the history of the family and the household. A central aspect of the debate relates the story of the family to implicit notions of modernization, with the rise of the nuclear family in the West as part of its economic and political success. During the past decade, however, that synthesis has begun to break down. Historians have begun to examine kinship - the way individual families are connected to each other through marriage and descent - finding that during the most dynamic period in European industrial development, class formation, and state reorganization, Europe became a “kinship hot” society. The essays in this volume explore two major transitions in kinship patterns - at the end of the Middle Ages and at the end of the eighteenth century - in an effort to reset the agenda in family history.

In Princely Brothers and Sisters, Jonathan R. Lyon takes a fresh look at sibling networks and the role they played in shaping the practice of politics in the Middle Ages. Focusing on nine of the most prominent aristocratic families in the German kingdom during the Staufen period (1138–1250), Lyon finds that noblemen—and to a lesser extent, noblewomen—relied on the cooperation and support of their siblings as they sought to maintain or expand their power and influence within a competitive political environment. Consequently, sibling relationships proved crucial at key moments in shaping the political and territorial interests of many lords of the kingdom. Family historians have largely overlooked brothers and sisters in the political life of medieval societies. As Lyon points out, however, siblings are the contemporaries whose lives normally overlap the longest.
