The Origin of the Family, Private Property, and the State (German: Der Ursprung der Familie, des Privateigenthums und des Staats) is an 1884 historical materialist treatise by Friedrich Engels. It is partially based on notes by Karl Marx to Lewis H. Morgan's book Ancient Society (1877). The book is an early anthropological work and is regarded as one of the first major works on family economics.

Der Band enthält die Faksimiles von zwei Alben aus dem Nachlass der Familie Marx. Das erste Album mit Fotografien von Marx' Tochter Laura wurde ihr anlässlich ihrer Hochzeit mit Paul Lafargue am 2. April 1868 von ihrer Freundin Evelin Manning geschenkt. Zu den Fotografien im Album gehören die von Karl Marx, seiner Frau und Töchter, von nahen Verwandten, wie der Schwester von Karl Marx Louise Juta, ihrem Mann und Kindern vom Kap der Guten Hoffnung, des Onkels Lion Philips und seiner Tochter Antoinette aus dem holländischen Zaltbommel, außerdem von Freunden und nahen Bekannten der Familie Lafargue. Das zweite Album von Marx' Tochter Jenny enthält Fragebogen, oder wie sie damals bezeichnet wurden "Confessions", und Autographen von Familienmitgliedern, Freundinnen und Freunden der Marx' Töchter, aber auch von Gästen des Hauses Marx. Alle Autorinnen und Autoren geben in einer gelösten, ungezwungenen Art und Weise Antworten in diesem im 19. Jahrhundert weitverbreiteten Gesellschaftsspiel, die höchst unterhaltsam Einblicke in die Privatsphäre der Familie Marx geben. Darüber hinaus wird das Ausmaß des Bekannten- und Freundeskreises der Familie Marx verdeutlicht; viele der hier vertretenen Personen sind in den bekannten Biografien bisher nicht aufgetaucht. So geben die keineswegs immer ernst gemeinten, augenzwinkernden Auskünfte einen Eindruck von der jeweiligen Persönlichkeit, den man so auf andere Weise kaum gewinnen könnte. Beide Alben wurde 1960 von Marx' Urenkel Marcel Charles Longuet dem Zentralen Parteiarchiv der KPdSU - dem heutigen Russländischen Staatlichen Archiv für Sozial- und Politikgeschichte - in Moskau überreicht. Erstmals werden die beiden Alben vollständig als Faksimile publiziert. Die Originalfotografien werden in jener Art dargeboten, wie sie überliefert sind. Einen besonderen ästhetisch-stimmungsvollen Reiz verströmen die originalen Abbildungen der Blätter. Diese Edition ist einmalig - sie gibt einen zusammenhängenden Eindruck über die Sammlung der Familienfotos und über die überlieferten Fragebogen und Autographen eines großen Personenkreises, der im Hause Marx verkehrte. Dabei konnten erstaunliche "Entdeckungen" gemacht bzw. Verwechslungen aufgeklärt werden. Die Edition entstand in russisch-japanisch-deutscher Kooperation und wird von einem einführenden Essay des Frankfurter Sozialwissenschaftlers, Marx-Herausgebers und Marx-Kenners Iring Fetscher begleitet. Nach einer Einführung zu jedem Album, in der die biografischen und historischen Zusammenhänge erläutert werden, wird jedes Foto bzw. jeder Fragebogen in Einzelannotationen kommentiert.

The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State focuses on early human history, following the disintegration of the primitive community and the emergence of a class society based on private property. Engels looks into the origin and essence of the state, and concludes it is bound to wither away leaving a classless society. Engels: "Along with [the classes] the state will inevitably fall. Society, which will reorganise production on the basis of a free and equal association of the producers, will put the whole machinery of state where it will then belong: into the museum of antiquity, by the side of the spinning-wheel and the bronze axe."
