Traditional nutrition education messages have not been found to be effective in promoting dietary behavior change. It has recently been suggested that using emotion-based messages (commonly used in industry to sell a product or service) may be a better way to influence decision-making, and could ultimately lead to behavior change. According to many research studies, family meals are positively associated with better dietary habits in children and adolescents. The purpose of this study was to uncover subconscious feelings mothers have toward family meals in an effort to produce more effective, emotion-based nutrition education messages promoting family mealtime. Five focus group interviews were conducted with 51 low-income African American (n=28) and white (n=23) mothers using a variety of metaphorical techniques to address their feelings toward family, various aspects of family meals, and qualities of effective messages for promoting family meals. The discussions were video-taped, transcribed, and manually analyzed using a content-driven, immersion/crystallization approach to qualitative data analysis. The major themes of "acceptance," "sharing," and "chaos" described many of the participants' family characteristics. In addition, "protective and loyal" emerged as a theme describing characteristics of the African American families. Accepting people who were not biological relatives into their families, as well as treating extended family as if they were immediate family, were common trends among both white and African American mothers. In addition, these women spoke about "sharing" a number of things with their families, such as good and bad day-to-day life experiences. Many women thought of chaos when they thought of their families, but that a chaotic environment was exciting to them nonetheless. Mothers who described mealtime as "stressful" were mothers who do not like to choose the foods to serve at meals, prepare the meals, or clean-up after meals. Some women also lack confidence in cooking, and find it stressful when their families complain about the food. Some women feel it is stressful to get everyone together for a meal, mainly because their children do not want to or everyone is too busy with activities. Others reported a preference of attending to their own needs instead of sitting down with their children during mealtime. Some mothers felt that family mealtime is merely obligatory and unimportant, and associated it primarily with eating and food. Others felt that it is a time to interact with and educate their children, and felt guilty when they were not able to provide family meals. Food choices for their ideal family meals were similar across all groups. "Home-made" meals were frequently mentioned, and many described their ideal meal as "simple," "quick," "healthy," and "attractive." "Snacks" were commonly chosen to be a part of ideal family meals. Some mothers desired separate "adult time" and "child time" at their ideal family meals, with the "adult time" including alcoholic beverages and attractive men. No racial differences in responses were found between the white and African American women, with the exception of the "protective and loyal" theme describing the characteristics of the African American families. Based on the mothers' feelings regarding what would encourage other mothers to provide family meals, the following are recommendations for an effective message: (1) Choose racially-diverse and non-traditional families whenever people are included as part of the images, (2) For an emotion-based message, use an image of a child dining alone at a table with a guilt-evoking message such as "Do you take the time?", "Life is too short to miss it.", or "Holidays are not the only times for family meals.", (3) Include an educational message on the importance of family meals, such as "Children who watch more television and eat fewer family meals may be more likely to become overweight. Share at least five meals a week--breakfast, lunch, or dinner--with your family." in addition to the guilt-evoking message, and (4) Use large, bold, and colorful lettering. Incorporating metaphorical techniques in qualitative research using focus groups can be an effective way to reach the underlying feelings of participants toward a specific subject. Data obtained in the current study can be used to develop innovative, emotion-based messages, incorporating emotional topics and ideas relevant to this target audience, to potentially bring about improved dietary habits that often result from family meals.

Exercise, meditation and yoga are some healthy ways to deal with stress and anxiety. If you are struggling to deal with your emotions, seek professional help. Emotional eating is a complex problem, but it is possible to overcome. With a little effort, you can learn to deal with your emotions in a healthy way and avoid the health problems associated with emotional eating.
