This book was written with basically two objectives in mind. The first one was to provide a comprehensive description of the Indonesian family planning program during the New Order regime of Suharto. The second to explain the fertility transition that took place in Indonesia during the same period. The rationale behind the first objective is the rather unique character of the Indonesian family planning program as a national program, being part of both the New Orderís development effort-and-rhetoric and peoples everyday life. The extent to which it became part of peoples and especially womens everyday life in various ways, sets the Indonesian family planning program apart from comparable programs in Asia. The second objective is an ambitious one. From all the theoretical and anecdotal literature on fertility transition, particularly in Asia, it is clear that it is a complex phenomenon that cannot be captured in a simple model. Nevertheless, the dramatic fertility decline that took place in Indonesia during 1968-1998 begs for an attempt at explanation. In this book, fertility decline is placed against a background of social, cultural and economic change, and is related to the way the family planning program was designed and implemented. The question of the exact contribution of the family planning program to fertility decline is addressed but can never be fully answered. This is because the impact of the family planning program cannot be isolated from the influence of other factors, such as, for example, cultural change leading to a rise of age at marriage, womens higher levels of educational attainment, increased family income, and so on. As the book shows, Indonesia provides a rich context for studying fertility decline and its determinants. The contributors come from several countries and have different backgrounds. They have in common their professional involvement with family planning, fertility and social change in Indonesia and their love for the country and its people.

A review of the literature from the past 10 years on men and reproductive health in Pakistan revealed only seven major studies. Overall, these studies indicate that Pakistani men are similar to women in terms of their fertility preferences, attitudes, and knowledge of family planning. Men are generally supportive of family planning and may even view specific methods more positively than women. Unclear, however, are the factors underlying large discrepancies between husbands' and wives' reports of family planning communication and decision making as well as contraceptive use. Reliance on withdrawal and condoms has increased in recent years to represent 50% of contraceptive usage, but vasectomy remains an underutilized option. The sources of men's family planning knowledge and supplies in Pakistan have not been investigated. Several studies have revealed very low awareness levels among men of both male and female reproductive health. Despite a demand for greater male involvement in family planning, programming in this area has been limited and awarded a low priority. Vasectomy remains the least publicized contraceptive option in Pakistan. Although more large-scale surveys on men and reproductive health would be useful, there is a particular need for anthropological studies capable of providing insight into complex issues such as how men and women negotiate contraceptive use, the reproductive health problems that concern Pakistani men, their preferred sources of family planning information, and ways in which men may be impeding fertility control efforts.

The study determined male involvement, acceptance and practice of family planning (FP), using cross-sectional study design (qualitative and quantitative); multiple sampling methods (simple random, systematic and purposive); Questionnaires and FGD to collect primary data, with a sample size of (300). The study population included health institutions, heads of households and opinion leaders. The study revealed that male knowledge (87%) and awareness (90%) of FP was very high; Appreciable male involvement (57.53%); Minimal male support to their spouses (43.95%); Men have positive attitude for FP (88.18%), but inadequate knowledge on FP (42.95%); Factors such as, inadequate knowledge on FP, value for children (boy child), poor spousal communication, and the influence of mother -in-laws were also identified as discouraging male involvement; About 12% of men were also afraid of using modern contraceptives due to its side effects. Natural FP methods should be included in the FP indicators and educators redefine the method in the local languages to be more specific (ideal family size); develop effective multi-media communications and Social marketing strategies to motivate men etc.

Bangladesh, south Asian nation is one of the most populous countries in the world.Family Planning and population maintenance is the most concerning issue at present for the govt of Bangladesh.Family planning program planners often view men as gatekeepers who, if involved in reproductive decision-making, will impede women's efforts to regulate fertility. This study examined fertility decisions of the family members and assistance of voluntary organization. It also covered male involvement in family planning and use of male methods are associated with the fertility decline and resulted in long-term benefits for women. Traditional notions about gender roles and family, in addition to economic concerns, shaped fertility decision making. Individual motivation rather than choice of methods was more important for positive family participation in family planning. Providers appeared to selectively apply interpersonal skills and common courtesy; rudeness to clients was not merely a reflection of ignorance, since the paramedics appeared to know the basic principles of counseling. Limited access to medication and often arbitrary ways of determining when to dispense it created suspicion.
