Excerpt from The Origin and Early History of the Family of Foe or Foe: With Full Pedigrees of the Irish Branch, of the Family, a Discussion of the True Ancestry Genealogical problems have a great attraction for the- genealogist. In the case of the family of Poe or Poe two problems of interest and difficulty presented themselves, viz., (i) the parentage and ancestry of William, Thomas, and Anthony Poe, who settled in Ireland early in the seventeenth century; and(2) the true ancestry of Edgar Allan Poe, the American poet; and it is submitted that correct solutions of both of them will be found in the following pages. In starting on this two-fold quest, I was certainly free from any preconceived ideas, and, indeed, from any preliminary knowledge. As to the parentage and early ancestry of the Poe settlers, no tradition had been handed down in the family as to the locality from which William, Thomas, or Anthony Poe had come; and if they brought any documents with them from their former home, these must have been lost or destroyed so far back as the Rebellion of 1641. The legend of the German origin of the family, it will be seen, is a comparatively modern invention, and has no real foundation. Finding a statement in Burkes Landed Gentry of Ireland, that the Poe family was at one time settled in Yorkshire, I began my searches in that quarter, but they were without success. NOTE: A number is prefixed to most names in this book and when referred to further in other parts of the book it is by this number. In many cases where it is necessary to give history ol this person and trace the descent from them their name is printed in "black type," with their number, as previously given, in brackets following the name. Where the chidren bear the surname Page only their given names are mentioned, otherwise the surname is stated. The Page family early became prominent in English history and all records go to show that they were eminent and influential in the courts of the various kings. It is quite interesting to trace the family to its origin, but owing to incompleteness of vital statistics of births, marriages and deaths during the earlier years it is a difficult task. While I have not been able to trace the exact genealogy from Hugo de Page through to Nicholas, of Essex, from whom we trace our descent, still it is quite probable that the line extended through some of the following parties, who are mentioned in English history, but I am unable to find date of birth or death of any of these parties, but simply memorandum which connects them with certain events which occurred. Records seem to show that they all claimed to be descendants of Sir Hugo and we shall therefore claim him as an ancestor. 1 SIR HUGO PAGE lived at Ebor, Yorkshire, England, in 1257. A record of his deeds and the granting to him of the name will be found in another chapter. 2 RICHARD PAGE, son of Hugo was appointed by King Edward I, of England, as an escort to accompany Alexandre III, King of Scotland, on his trip through England.
