Parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experience unique parenting demands. Although these parents often report high levels of mental health challenges, such as depression (e.g., Scherer et al., 2019), they also report resilience factors such as family support and hope (e.g., Ekas et al., 2016). The present study investigated a novel construct, family relationship hope, in parents of children with ASD by examining the psychometric properties of the Family Relationship Hope Scale (FRHS), variables associated with family relationship hope and its link with depression. Factor analyses examined the factor structure and model fit of the FRHS. The post-crisis phase of the Double ABCX model (McCubbin & Patterson, 1983) provided a framework to conceptualize possible predictors of family relationship hope, through three steps in a hierarchical linear regression. Finally, a logistic regression analysis examined the likelihood of participants having clinically significant depression (Kroenke et al., 2001). Findings indicated a single factor structure, good model fit and internal reliability for the FRHS. Increased family support and having an adolescent child with ASD predicted higher family relationship hope, and relationship status and age of diagnosis served as important predictors in the model. Finally, family relationship hope significantly predicted the presence of clinically significant depression in parents of children with ASD. Results of the present study offer implications for counselor educators, mental health counselors, policy, and research that may help enhance the lives of families that include a child with ASD.

Nurses encounter many parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Both parents are under stress that ultimately impacts their health related quality of life (HRQL). Few studies assess the mediators of parenting stress on HRQL for both parents. This study explored the relationship of parenting stress, family functioning and HRQL for parenting dyads of children with ASD. Lazarus and Folkman's (1984) Transactional Model of Stress and Coping and Lakey and Cohen's (2000) Social Support Theory framed the study. Implementing a cross sectional, descriptive design, 387 parents (n=64 dyads) of ASD-affected children, from 46 states, completed web-based surveys. Demographics, the Feetham Family Functioning Survey (FFFS), Parenting Stress Scale: Autism (PSS:A), and the Rand 36 HRQL measure were collected. The FFFS discrepancy score (D), quantified differences between expectation and reality. The Rand 36 has a mental (MCS) and a physical (PCS) component scale. A non-parametric Wilcoxon test was used to compare fathers and mothers. Pearson correlation and linear regression were used to analyze relationships. Females' family functioning discrepancy scores between 'what is' and 'should be' family functioning were significantly wider than males, p=.002. As the number of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in South Africa increases annually, so too does the number of parents raising these children. The issue addressed by this study is the gap in current literature on the hope experiences in parents of a child with ASD in South Africa. While numerous research studies have dealt with the experiences of parents raising a child with ASD, majority - specifically in Africa - focus on the negative experiences. Very few studies have been conducted on hope experiences and ASD, and these are almost exclusively within an international context. The purpose of this exploratory qualitative case study was to explore and describe the hope experiences of parents raising a child with ASD. The conveniently selected participants (two females) each had a child who was attending The Autism School1, an intervention centre in Johannesburg. An interpretive phenomenological approach allowed the researcher to understand the unique, subjective meaning that parents assign to their own experiences. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview and a participant research journal for each participant. Parents raising a child with ASD experience a variety of hope related experiences that either enhance or diminish hope. Health professionals either reduced hope by giving information at the time of the diagnosis that was not specific enough, or enhanced hope by interacting with the parents in a way that enhanced learning. Hope was also enhanced when parents felt connected with sources of support. Generating options to address the challenges experienced enhanced survival related hope whereas feelings of powerlessness over certain situations resulted in reduced hope. Being able to regulate emotions was important in enhancing survival related hope. Spiritual related hope was enhanced when in conjunction with the practical interventions the parents pursued, they were able to rely on a higher power to bring about change in the child through hoping for a miracle. These findings may be useful for health professionals working with these parents as it may provide a new way of understanding and supporting them.
