Excerpt from Famous Land Fights His book is intended to be a companion I volume to Mr. John Richard Hale's popular account of the evolution of naval warfare (famous Sea Fzg/zk, from Salamz's to Tsu Methuen 69° Co., It is an attempt to trace in the same way the development of land fighting from the days of early tribal warfare to the great conflicts of Nations in Arms in our own time. The evolution of weapons and tactics is described in bold outline, typical battles being dealt with in fuller detail in each of the great periods of history. I am quite aware that some of my conclusions as to various points are still matters of debate among experts. To give one instance, I am familiar with Professor Delbruck's theory, according to which the armies engaged in many famous battles of antiquity and of the early medieval period were mustered in much smaller force than that assigned to them by the usually accepted tradition of history. It will be seen that I adopt this view only to a very partial extent. But in a popular work of this kind one cannot discuss rival theories and state at length the arguments for and against them. Excerpt from The Battle Roll: An Encyclopedia Containing Descriptions of the Most Famous and Memorable Land Battles and Sieges in All Ages; Arranged Alphabetically and Chronologically Abancay was fought near a river in Peru of that name, on the 12th of July, 1537, between the Spanish troops of Alvarado on the one side, and those of Almagro on the other. The battle occurred during the civil war which broke out among the Spaniards after their conquest of Peru; and the forces on both sides were nearly equal, each consisting of about five hundred men. The loss in killed and wounded, on either side, was trifling; but Alvarado and his whole army were made prisoners by the victorious tr00ps of Almagro. Excerpt from The Old Front Line This description of the old front line, as it was when the Battle of the Somme began, may some day be of use. All wars end; even this war will some day end, and the ruins will be rebuilt and the field full of death will grow food, and all this frontier of trouble will be forgotten. When the trenches are filled in, and the plough has gone over them, the ground will not long keep the look of war. One summer with its flowers will cover most of the ruin that man can make, and then these places, from which the driving back of the enemy began, will be hard indeed to trace, even with maps. It is said that even now in some places the wire has been removed, the explosive salved, the trenches filled, and the ground ploughed with tractors. In a few years time, when this war is a romance in memory, the soldier looking for his battlefield will find his marks gone. Centre Way, Peel Trench, Munster Alley, and these other paths to glory will be deep under the corn, and gleaners will sing at Dead Mule Corner. Excerpt from Fights for the Flag And yet the fighting quality of these clumsy fleets was of a very high order. These Dutchmen, heavy footed, solid, grim, were in the seventeenth century, to use the phrase of a French writer, the Phoenicians of the modern world, the waggoners of all seas. They were the commercial heirs of Venice. The fire of their long struggle for freedom had given to the national character the edge and temper of steel. They had swept the Spanish flag from the seas. The carrying trade of the world was in their hands. They fished in all waters, traded in all ports, gathered the wealth of the world under all skies, and, as far as marine qualities were concerned, might almost have been web-footed. Holland to-day is a land Without ambition, comfortable, fat, heavy - bottomed. In the middle of the seventeenth century Holland proudly claimed to be the greatest naval power in the world, and by daring seamanship, great fleets, famous admirals, and a world-encompassing trade, it went far to justify that boast.
