La vicenda evolutiva delle fondazioni secentesche dei Carmelitani Scalzi entro i confini dello Stato Pontificio ne inquadra il primo fertile ciclo insediativo fuori dal mondo iberico d'origine, rappresentando, per l'intensità del fenomeno, una sorta di reviviscenza in area romana dell'eroica epopea vissuta tra il 1562 e il 1582 da Teresa d'Avila e Giovanni della Croce. L'esplorazione della genesi e formazione di questi complessi porta alla luce, al di là degli specifici processi esecutivi, significati aggiuntivi collegati allo sviluppo dei contesti di inserimento e alle particolari condizioni sinergiche – ovvero conflittuali – in ragione dei cangianti equilibri tra le alleanze o le inimicizie di attori e detentori di interessi diversi, già identificati dalla storiografia come protagonisti essenziali delle dinamiche urbane e della loro rilettura esegetica. Una miriade di alleati, comprimari, cardinali protettori, vescovi promotori, ammiratori devoti, eredi di nobili casate o principi designati di corone europee, si confrontano e si fronteggiano in queste pagine con altrettanto numerosi religiosi di Ordini differenti, proprietari confinanti, amministratori di spazi pubblici e privati, spesso in delicati tessuti storici consolidati, lasciando tuttavia un raggio d'azione da assoluti protagonisti ai più o meno anonimi esponenti carmelitani. Dalle figure gerarchiche centrali e provinciali, ai meticolosi estensori della normativa edilizia; dai frati-architetti, ai professionisti affiliati; dagli agiografi e cronachisti, ai custodi di complessi ampli, stratificati e, in buona parte dei casi, drasticamente trasformati rispetto alle condizioni originarie a causa di intense campagne di soppressioni, demolizioni, anacronistiche rifunzionalizzazioni. L'analisi di un fenomeno che potrebbe considerarsi di nicchia offre qui l'occasione di una lettura originale di un secolo di architettura barocca nell'area romana allargata, sotto la lente focale della particolare committenza congregazionale. SAVERIO STURM insegna Storia dell'Architettura presso la Facoltà di Architettura dell'Università di Roma Tre. After more than three centuries of silence, the voice of Francesco Cavalli is being heard loud and clear on the operatic stages of the world. The coincidence of productions at La Scala (Milan) and Covent Garden (London) in the same month (September 2008) of two different operas signals a new stage in the recovery of these extraordinary works, confined until now to special venues committed to 'early music'-opera festivals, conservatory, and university productions. The works of the composer who is credited with having invented the genre of opera as we know it are finally enjoying a renaissance. A new edition of Cavalli's twenty-eight operas is in preparation, and the composer and his works are at the center of a great deal of new scholarship ranging from the study of sources and production issues to the cultural context of opera of this period. In the face of such burgeoning interest, this collection of essays considers the Cavalli revival from various points of view. In particular, it explores the multiple issues involved in the transformation of an operatic manuscript into a performance. Durante la prima età moderna tra stati europei e mondo ottomano proficui scambi diplomatici si alternavano a periodi di guerra. Nella penisola italiana a livello locale le interazioni erano ambivalenti: commercianti dalle terre ottomane animavano fiere e mercati mentre le continue incursioni da parte dei corsari costituivano una calamità per le comunità costiere. Il volume presenta un risvolto poco conosciuto delle complesse relazioni tra la penisola italiana e il mondo che collettivamente era definito come “turco”: la donazione di trofei di guerra a chiese e santuari come ex voto. Attraverso lo studio dei manufatti e di documenti d’archivio, l’autore ricostruisce il programma epigrafico ed iconografico di sette stendardi che furono ricollocati lungo la costa adriatica dello Stato della Chiesa, illustrando le diverse fasi che caratterizzarono la ricezione dei trofei e sottolineando l’importanza di alcune bandiere come oggetto di studio per il primo orientalismo.
