The Spaniards call her La Generala, the General. But to an Itneg tribe in Abra in the northern part of Las Islas Filipinas, she is simply Ilang, the once little girl who was forced to leave the mountain village of her Itneg mother so that she would grow up in the ways of her Spanish father. And in that mountain village, she also left behind an Itneg boy who promised to bring her back. After the death of her husband, now she is back, as leader of the Ilocano rebels fighting for their independence from the Spanish, asking for help from the warriors of her mother's Itneg tribe, now led by the boy she left behind. Will the Itnegs help? Will they join a fight for a cause that does not concern them? Will they die for the Ilocanos who treat them with suspicion and contempt and see them as uncivilized savages? Will the boy who had not stopped loving her and who is now the man that the Itneg warriors follow, help the little girl, now the feared leader of the rebels, and in the process avenge her Ilocano husband? This is a story of Gabriela Silang, the Joan of Arc of the Philippines and the Itneg warrior who never stopped loving her and the Spanish Capitn who was determined to stop her at all cost.

The memoirs of Filipinos in Hollywood span more than 80 years, dating back to the early 1920s when the first wave of immigrants, who were mostly males, arrived and settled in Los Angeles. Despite the obstacles and hardships of discrimination, these early Filipino settlers had high hopes and dreams for the future. Many sought employment in Hollywood, only to be marginalized into service-related fields, becoming waiters, busboys, dishwashers, cooks, houseboys, janitors, and chauffeurs. They worked at popular restaurants, homes of the rich and famous, movie and television studios, clubs, and diners. For decades, Filipinos were the least recognized and least documented Asians in Hollywood. But many emerged from the shadows to become highly recognized talents, some occupying positions in the entertainment industry that makes Hollywood what it is today--the world's capital of entertainment and glamour.

This text illuminates the oral traditions of the Philippines and the convergence of capitalism and the indigenous spirit world. The author examines the social relations, cultural meanings and political struggles surrounding the rise of sugar haciendas on Negros during the late Spanish colonial period, and their subsequent transformation under the aegis of the American colonial state. Drawing on oral history, interviews and a wide array of sources culled from archives in Spain, the United States, the United Kingdom and the Philippines, the author reconstructs the emergence of a sugar-planter class and its strategic maneuvers to attain hegemony. The book portrays local actors taking an active role in shaping the external forces that impinge on their lives. It examines hacienda life from the indigenous perspective of magic and spirit beliefs, reinterpreting several critical phases of Philippine history in the process. By analyzing mythic tales as bearers of historical consciousness, the author explores the complex interactions between local culture, global interventions, and capitalist market forces.

This book is about José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda, widely known as José Rizal (June 19, 1861 – December 30, 1896). He was a Filipino nationalist and polymath during the tail end of the Spanish colonial period of the Philippines. An ophthalmologist by profession, Rizal became a writer and a key member of the Filipino Propaganda Movement which advocated political reforms for the colony under Spain. He was executed by the Spanish colonial government for the crime of rebellion after an anti-dd revolution, inspired in part by his writings, broke out. Though he was not actively involved in its planning or conduct, he ultimately approved of its goals which eventually led to Philippine independence.
