Guido è un professionista del mondo teatrale col vizio dell’alcol, che però giustifica attribuendolo a un vuoto estetico, cioè alla pressoché assoluta mancanza di bellezza della cosiddeta società dei consumi. La sua vita è un susseguirsi di fallimenti sentimentali e artistici e annega nel disordine morale. Tuttavia egli è ossessionato dall’ansia di purificazione e dalla ricerca affannosa della grande bellezza che, a un certo punto, crede d’avere individuato nelle splendide fattezze d’una donna portoghese, di cui s’innamora follemente. Ma commette purtroppo un tragico sbaglio che avrà per lui conseguenze nefaste, perché l’angelo di cui s’è infatuato è tutt’altro che un angelo e lo condurrà fatalmente nel baratro. Il fascino perverso dell’abisso è un romanzo di difficile classificazione, sempre a metà tra il realismo e il realismo magico, in debito e in dialogo con la grande letteratura in lingua lusitana del vecchio e del nuovo continente. Lo arricchiscono e ne complicano una definizione precisa di genere i numerosi excursus estetici. Ma l’etichetta che forse più gli si addice è quella di romanzo “on the road”, perché in esso è tracciato l’itinerario d’un viaggio, anche metaforico e spirituale. Un viaggio verso la catarsi della bellezza e dell’innocenza che si conclude però con la rovinosa caduta nell’abisso. Giancarlo Interlandi è nato a Vizzini (CT) il 21 luglio 1943 e risiede ad Acitrezza. È laureato in Ingegneria meccanica ed è attualmente in pensione, dopo avere esercitato per molti anni l’attività di docente. In campo letterario ha conseguito circa duecento primi premi, fra cui il “Borgognoni”, il “San Domenichino”, il “Giorgio La Pira”, il “Marco Tanzi” e il “Rhegium Julii”, e altri minori. Nel 1985 gli è stato assegnato il “Premio della Cultura della Presidenza del Consiglio”. Robert le Diable by Giacomo Meyerbeer is regarded as a musical milestone, a definitive statement in the 19th-century development of French grand opéra from the tragédie lyrique of Lully, Rameau, Gluck and Spontini. The libretto by Eugène Scribe and Germain Delavigne was derived from the medieval legend of “Robert the Devil”. First performed on 21 November 1831 at the Paris Opéra, the work brought Meyerbeer international celebrity. Robert le Diable remains a legend in the annals of opera. This Guide has resulted from years of research on the papers and music of Giacomo Meyerbeer, and aims to provide a bibliographical aid and point of reference for further research. The first part presents the private papers connected to the composer and his principal librettist, Eugène Scribe—both archival and printed, with working papers and correspondence, as found in Berlin, Paris and some of the famous libraries of the world. The body of Part 2 draws together all the known resources on Meyerbeer's life and historical reputation—from full scale biographies and entries in reference books, through critical discussions to website resources to records of symposia. The third part provides material about his background with its unique mixture of Jewish and Prussian elements, the powerful role of the city of Berlin in his life and work. The fourth part lists bibliographic material for Meyerbeer's music, looking at his operas, grouped as German, Italian and French, with each individual entry providing a record of the scores available, both modern and historical, the various arrangements made from the operas during the heyday of their popularity, reviews of modern performances, discography, and bibliography of studies and publications pertinent to the wider cultural and historical contexts of the works. Over the past century, the Italian landscape has undergone exceedingly rapid transformations, shifting from a mostly rural environment to a decidedly modern world. This changing landscape is endowed with a narrative agency that transforms how we understand our surroundings. Situated at the juncture of Italian studies and ecocriticism and following the recent “material turn” in the environmental humanities, Elemental Narratives outlines an original cultural and environmental map of the bel paese. Giving equal weight to readings of fiction, nonfiction, works of visual art, and physical sites, Enrico Cesaretti investigates the interconnected stories emerging from both human creativity and the expressive eloquence of “glocal” materials, such as sulfur, petroleum, marble, steel, and asbestos, that have helped make and, simultaneously, “un-make” today’s Italy, affecting its socio-environmental health in multiple ways. Embracing the idea of a decentralized agency that is shared among human and nonhuman entities, Cesaretti suggests that engaging with these entangled discursive and material texts is a sound and revealing ecocritical practice that promises to generate new knowledge and more participatory, affective responses to environmental issues, both in Italy and elsewhere.
