This book proposes an interpretation of Francoism as the Spanish variant of fascism. Unlike Italian fascism and Nazism, the Franco regime survived the Second World War and continued its existence until the death of dictator Francisco Franco. Francoism was, therefore, the Last Survivor of the fascisms of the interwar period. And indeed this designation applies equally to Franco. The work begins with an analysis of the historical identity of Spanish fascism, constituted in the process of fascistization of the Spanish right during the crisis of the Second Republic, and consolidated in the formation of the fascist single-party and the New State during the civil war. Subsequent chapter contributions focus on various cultural and social projects (the university, political-cultural journals, the Labor University Service, local policies and social insurance) that sought to socialize Spaniards in the political principles of the Franco regime and thereby to strengthen social cohesion around it. Francoism faced varying degrees of non-compliance and outright hostility, expressed as different forms of cultural opposition to the Franco regime, especially in the years of its maturity (decades of the fifties and sixties), from Spaniards both inside Spain and in exile. Such opposition is explored in the context of how the regime reacted via the social, cultural and economic inducements at its disposal. The editors and contributors are widely published in the field of Spain of the Second Republic, the civil war and the Franco dictatorship. Research material is drawn from primary archival sources, and provides new information and new interpretations on Spanish politics, culture and society during the dictatorship.

De esta forma, se abarca un amplio abanico de formas y expresiones que van desde las estrategias del régimen para convertir los entornos festivos en espacios de afirmación nacionalcatólica o fascistización a los comportamientos heterodoxos o contestatarios tolerados en el marco del ritual. Se analizan en profundidad fenómenos festivos como Las Fallas, los Sanfermines, la Semana Santa en Andalucía, las fiestas mayores de Cataluña, la romería de El Rocío, el folklore de la Sección Femenina, el Día de Asturias, las fiestas rurales en Mallorca o los Carnavales de Cádiz. Cuestiona el enfoque lineal y la segmentación historicista y busca entender el enfrentamiento que a lo largo del siglo xx ha ido oponiendo a los defensores de un arte –predominantemente– realista o mimético a los partidarios de un arte –predominantemente– antimimético, es decir, un arte por el arte, un arte desrealizado, cuando no deshumanizado. Es lo que llamamos aquí «querella del realismo». En el conjunto de estos estudios nos detenemos en tres momentos de esta lucha: realismo y modernismo(s), literatura deshumanizada y de avanzada, nouveau romany realismo social. En España, la teoría de la novela de José Ortega y Gasset –y su polémica recepción en los años 1920, 1950 y 1970–, jugó un papel decisivo en la interpretación de estos enfrentamientos que se solapan con supuestas crisis de la novela y la construcción del canon. A partir de esta constatación, se levanta el velo sobre los motivos –ideológicos– que han llevado a la condena de los creadores más atentos a la dimensión poética del lenguaje y al rechazo de los supuestos desvíos de un género novel, tildados de antinovelescos, por antimiméticos.

Se explica cómo llegó a ser dominante una masculinidad mitad monje mitad soldado, hasta que fue superada por otra al final de estas dos décadas: el productor. Entre la autarquía y el desarrollismo, el trabajo nunca dejó de ser una cuestión relevante para regir las vidas de los españoles y las españolas, y sus relaciones cotidianas se jerarquizaron deforma radical desde el alineamiento de la dictadura de Franco con los fascismos hasta su aperturismo iliberal.
