At the heart of this anthology lies the world of fashion: a concept that pervades the realm of clothes and dress; appearances and fashionable manners; interior design; ideas and attitudes. Here sixteen papers focus on the Nordic world (Denmark, Norway, Sweden Finland, Iceland, the Faroe Isles and Greenland) within the time frame AD 1500Ð1850. This was a period of rapid and far-reaching social, political and economic change, from feudal Europe through political revolution, industrialisation, development of international trade, religious upheaval and technological innovation; changes impacting on every aspect of life and reflected in equally rapid and widespread changes in fashion at all levels of society. These papers present a broad image of the theme of fashion as a concept and as an empirical manifestation in the Nordic countries in early modernity, exploring a variety of ways in which that world encountered fashionable impressions in clothing and related aspects of material culture from Europe, the Russian Empire, and far beyond. The chapters range from object-based studies to theory-driven analysis. Elite and sophisticated fashions, the importation of luxuries and fashion garments, christening and bridal wear, silk knitted waistcoats, woollen sweaters and the influence of the whaling trade on womenÕs clothing are some of the diverse topics considered, as well as religious influences on perceptions of luxury and aspects of the garment trade and merchant inventories.

Representations of fashionable femininity have multiplied throughout the 20th century, with complex versions of feminine identity being found in fashion store advertising, magazines, photography, and museum collections. This book examines the relationship between women's fashion, female representation and femininity in Britain throughout the 1900s. The authors unpick the dynamics of the fashion system and set fashion into the context of British social life, using the oral history accounts of women of all classes to highlight the meanings of particular fashions.

“A must for fashion students and followers alike.” -Susannah Frankel, fashion director, The Independent. True style transcends fashion. Style is innovation, creation, and inspiration-with a personal twist. But the ability to find such inspiration and blend it into a signature wardrobe is what sets real style makers apart. With her sharp eye and clever pen, long time fashion editor and style maven Elizabeth Walker navigates fashion devotees through the recurring themes that define the essence of style. She juxtaposes more than 450 exhilarating images, from 1865 to the present and from street fashion to haute couture. These iconic looks from famous stars and anonymous fashionistas alike include Diana Ross’s striped jumpsuit, Marilyn Monroe’s simple sheath dress, Louis Armstrong’s argyle socks, Kate Moss’s bondage dress, Tom Selleck’s Magnum P.I.-era jeans, Raquel Welch’s itsy-bitsy bikini, Jackie O’s embroidered peasant blouse, Lauren Hutton’s menswear suit, and Farrah Fawcett’s chain-mail tank dress, as well as leopard-print sunglasses, platform clogs, and a natty fedora. Divided into thirteen categories ranging from accessories to menswear, prints to denim, and exotic influences to animal motifs-these photographs will guide readers to create their own unique look.

Dress You Up is an anthology like no other. The twelve diverse stories in this collection speak to the multiple ways in which fashion is more than just the clothes we wear. There will be no frivolous yarns about fashion here—those tales can be found in other closets. This Capsule Collection of Fashionable Fiction illustrates how the clothing and accessories we wear or covet often reflect past memories, present challenges, or future hopes and dreams. The stories focus on themes such as trauma and healing, perception and identity, love and loss, hopes and dreams. Ultimately, these stories help us understand how fashion can shape who we are or who we want to be. Edited by Brian Centrone (Salon Style: Fiction, Poetry & Art and Southern Gothic: New Tales of the South) and illustrated by Stephen Tornero, Dress You Up will dazzle and delight readers as much as it will touch and move them.

Della Cruscan Poetry Women And The Fashionable Newspaper written by Claire Knowles and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-10-17 with Literary Criticism categories.

This book explores Della Cruscan poetry in the late eighteenth-century literary scene. A sociable, ornate, and deeply theatrical type of poetry, Della Cruscanism was associated with writers like Robert Merry, Mary Robinson, and Hannah Cowley. While Merry is the poet most commonly associated with the Della Cruscan school, this book argues that Della Cruscanism was a movement dominated by female poets and that this was one of the key reasons for the later disavowal and downgrading of its poetic accomplishments. It offers a close examination of these women writers and their role in shaping the poetic culture of the fashionable newspaper. In doing so, this study offers the first account of the feminization of the fashionable newspaper and of popular literary culture in the final years of the eighteenth century.
