"The authors conducted a prevention program called Fast Track, consisting of multicomponent, home-school prevention activities carried out with at-risk children from first to 10th grades over a 10-year period, to prevent serious antisocial behavior and youth violence and achieve positive social, emotional, and academic outcomes. They describe the research that informed the design of the program as part of their Conduct Problems Prevention Research Group, how the study was implemented, and outcomes up to 20 years later. They discuss the context for youth violence prevention in the US; the developmental and intervention research that informed the design of the program; the study design and the children and families who participated in it; interventions and impacts in elementary, middle, and high school years; early adult outcomes of the program; implications for developmental theory and research on the prevention of violence; and how communities can address the problem of future violence by focusing on high-risk young children."--Provided by publisher.

IloveBusinessIntelligence.IloveBIbecauseitisallaboutbecomingbetter. BI is all about empowering us with knowledge and that knowledge is the power to realize our full potential. As Zorge the spy said, “knowledge is power”, and who doesn’t love to have the power to know, to understand and to make intelligent decision? I do. Since the dawn of the modern information system it was obvious that the information accumulated in the machine is wasted if there is no way to analyze it and learn from it. From as early as the 1950s, data analysis systems and, later, decision support systems were designed, developed anddeployedwiththatintent. However, onlyinthelastdecadehavethese systems become both reasonably affordable and mainstream and their business impact indisputable. The last decade has also seen the emergence of OLAP as the centerpiece of the BI technologies. The OLAP multidimensional databases combine incredible performance with unsurpassed analytical power and, in my opinion, are the foundation of the BI platform. While the performance differences between the multidimensional da- bases and the traditional relational databases are very significant, Moore’s law, which states that the hardware computing power doubles every 18 months, renders this advantage of the OLAP databases temporary. Sooner or later, the raw computing power of the common server machines will be sufficient to provide the performance needed for sophisticated analysis even when the data is stored in a relational database.

In the past few decades the number of women entering graduate and professional schools has been going up and up, while the number of women reaching the top rung of the corporate and academic worlds has remained relatively stagnant. Why are so many women falling off the fast track? In this timely book, Mary Ann Mason traces the career paths of the first generation of ambitious women who started careers in academia, law, medicine, business, and the media in large numbers in the 1970s and '80s. Many women who had started families but continued working had ended up veering off the path to upper management at a point she calls "the second glass ceiling." Rather than sticking to their original career goals, they allowed themselves to slide into a second tier of management that offers fewer hours, less pay, lower prestige, and limited upward mobility. Men who did likewise--entered the career world with high aspirations and then started families while working--not only did not show the same trend, they reached even higher levels of professional success than men who had no families at all. Along with her daughter, an aspiring journalist, Mason has written a guide for young women who are facing the tough decision of when--and if--to start a family. It is also a guide for older women seeking a second chance to break through to the next level, as Mason herself did in academia. The book features anecdotes and strategies from the dozens of women they interviewed. Advice ranges from the personal (know when to say "no," the importance of time management) to the institutional, with suggestions for how the workplace itself can be changed to make it easier for ambitious working mothers to reach the top levels. The result is a roadmap of new choices for women facing the sobering question of how to balance a successful career with family.

Currently over 130 million people visit the emergency department every year. Given this statistic, there is a good chance that you or a member of your family will need to seek medical care at an emergency department in the next year. Despite these high visitation rates, many people going to the emergency department, seeking medical care, are unaware of the people they will meet and the process they will encounter. Having a good understanding of both will help you to navigate through your visit and optimize your understanding and, hopefully, the care you will receive. It is through this understanding that it is hoped you will have a productive, informative, and satisfying emergency department experience. Navigating Medicine: a Patient's Guide to Visiting the Emergency Department will guide you through the emergency department""providing you with information on the process, including triage, the time you wait, the people you may meet, the types of illnesses you may have that will need emergent treatment as well as the discharge process. With half of all medical care in America being provided through emergency departments, it is almost inevitable that, at some time in the future, you or someone you know will find themselves in an emergency department. Why is it so important to know what to expect and what is expected of you during a visit? The more you understand the people and the process involved, the better you will be prepared and, hopefully, the more fruitful an experience it will be. In Navigating Medicine: a Patient's Guide to Visiting the Emergency Department, you will be familiarized with the process you will encounter from the moment you are first assessed in triage continuing through either admission to the hospital or discharge from the emergency department at the end of your visit.
