King Suddhodana, the loving father of Lord Buddha, is a prominent figure in the history of the Buddhist order. He is a character who went through many setbacks and traumas in his life because of his overflowing love for his son. He was able to finally discover the reality of life, right through all such challenges. This novel beautifully portrays King Suddhodana's character, utilizing the faculties of meaningful imagination. And "grace of expression" is manifest in many instances as the story gradually climaxes. As an excellent work of literature, it deals with a theme of permanent and universal interest since the story is webbed around one of the greatest personalities in the history of mankind. The main challenge in recreating King Suddhodana's life story into a novel is the rarity of life-related facts about him, other than the stories usually heard within the life story of Buddha. The book has overcome those challenges by carefully selecting and arranging the available facts in proper order and has beautifully reconstructed them into a narrative of rare distinction. The novel transforms the character of Suddhodana from a mundane position culminating step by step into a higher level of spiritual attainment in a fascinating manner. The ultimate outcome is a historical personality immortalized in literature. King Suddhodana was considered eighty-five years old at the time of his death. That was five years after the Supreme Buddha's Enlightenment. Therefore, it is important to remember that the king was approximately eighty years old at the time of Prince Siddhartha's enlightenment. He was seventy-four years old at the time of the Great Renunciation, and forty- five years old at the time of Prince Siddhartha's birth. These are all valuable information in understanding the contextual behaviour of King Suddhodana. How sensitive a father is in his affection for his son is evident only when you delve into his life. Unfortunately, not enough has been written about it. The life story of the great King Suddhodana, which stands as a symbol of a father's love for his son, gives such an interpretation. "Of course, at first, I wanted to make you a universal king... It was a sentiment that emerged from my ego. And a sentiment that arose in thinking about the dynasty... Forgive me... Today, you are a greater person than that. The number of people who have found happiness through your Dhamma is immeasurable. I'm now a victim of both aging and sickness, which I tried to hide from you in your childhood. I'll die soon... Even in your household days, you told me that there is no escape for people from this truth. I did not accept them then. Now, I realize very well that for the cessation of Samsaric suffering, the path of Nirvana must be followed." Near his death, this confession made by King Suddhodana is like a mirror reflecting how his life was transformed by his love for his son, the Buddha.

"Fathering Your Father is indubitably an important, timely work. In this incisive re-reading of the sources for the early history of Chinese Chan Buddhism, Cole conveys a new understanding of material familiar to scholars that might well make students engage with these sources more imaginatively. Hitherto scholars have pored over the five or six key sources; now we are invited to read them as successive literary inventions. In short, this study has no competition and is bound to provoke debate."—T. H. Barrett, Professor of East Asian History, School of Oriental and African Studies, London, and author of The Woman Who Discovered Printing

What is the relationship between an artist\'s life and the imaginative work he creates? Here are 15 fictions about love and vulnerability, fear, fragility and forgiveness, written over a span of 30 years (1971-2005), that explore various facets of this question, including¿a Twilight Zone-esque parable of race hatred and genocide, blended family values, a fateful college acid trip, an evocation of a deckhand\'s life on the Mississippi, a father-son fishing trip with existential overtones, and a risque send-up of Frank Capra\'s holiday classic.

Available until now only in limited editions, "Venerable Father" has become an underground classic among Buddhists, especially those practicing the Thai tradition. It details the joys and struggles of Paul Breiter's years with Ajahn Chah, who was perhaps Thailand's best-known and most-loved Buddhist master. Breiter describes Ajahn Chah as a figure who is at once human yet extraordinary, an orthodox yet unconventional teacher whose remarkable skill, patience, and compassion in training disciples flowed naturally from his deep and joyous realization of the truth. Breiter also explains, quite vividly, the life of a Westerner in a Thai forest monastery and the unique spiritual lessons to be learned there. PAUL BREITER ordained in the Theravada Buddhist tradition in Thailand in 1970 and soon thereafter met Ajahn Chah. He became one of Ajahn Chah's favorite disciples and his translator, and stayed with him until disrobing in 1977. Since then, he has maintained close ties to Ajahn Chah's lineage while studying Zen and Tibetan Buddhism, and he has continued to translate Ajahn Chah's teachings, which appear in "Still Forest Pool: The Insight Meditation of Achaan Chaa" (with Jack Kornfield) and "Being Dharma: The Essence of the Buddha's Teachings."

Max Müller, often recognized as the father of the history of religions, made the prediction: "I believe the final struggle between Buddhism and Christianity, whenever that comes to pass, will be a hard one, and will end in a compromise-- there is a prophecy." This comparative study between Judaism, Christianity and Buddhism is itself the key which opens the door to the understanding and fulfillment of that prediction. The first comparative work is a surprisingly contrasting presentation of major teachings in opposition between Judaism and Christianity, whereas the second study is equally profound in its revelation of the true spiritual relationship that exists between the Buddha and the Christ which is at the very heart of Max Müller's prophecy.
