After decades of focusing on the mother's role in parenting, family studies researchers have turned their attention to the role of the father in parenting and family development. The results shed new light on childhood development and question conventional wisdom by showing that beyond providing the more traditional economic support of the family, fathers do indeed matter when it comes to raising a child. Stemming from a series of workshops and publications sponsored by the Family and Child Well-Being Network, under the federal fatherhood initiative of the National Institute of Child Health and Development, this comprehensive volume focuses on ways of measuring the efficacy of father involvement in different scenarios, using different methods of assessment and different populations. In the process, new research strategies and new parental paradigms have been formulated to include paternal involvement. Moreover, this volume contains articles from a variety of influences while addressing the task of finding the missing pieces of the fatherhood construct that would work for new age, as well as traditional and minority fathers. The scope of this discussion offers topics of interest to basic researchers, as well as public policy analysts.

Shifting marriage and divorce patterns, transformation in the workplace, the growth of the women′s movement and the development of the men′s movement, all these social and cultural changes have changed fathers′ traditional family roles and forced a reexamination of how fathers and children interact. Progress in this new understanding of fathers is highlighted in Fatherhood, a volume of empirical and theoretical research on fathers in families. The research pieces, written by such well-known scholars as Furstenberg, Seltzer, and Greif, examine differences in culture, class, nationality, and custodial status. The chapters focus on legal, economic, and policy questions, as well as on the interaction between fathers and children within the family. Some of the topics explored are fathers′ involvement in child care, fathering in the inner city, and single fathers who have custody of their children. Fatherhood is the most current assessment of our research base on fatherhood available for professional, scholarly, and classroom use and is important reading for those interested in men′s studies, family studies, gender studies, sociology, psychology, and social work.

There is a dearth of research focusing on fathering in families of color. The present study argues that ecological factors, especially SES and neighborhood quality, exert a strong influence on racial and ethnic differences in fathering role identity, which in turn affect fathering role performance. The primary goal of the present study is thus to investigate the impact of ecological factors on what it means to be a good father among African American (n = 308), Latino American (n = 598), Asian American (n = 580), and white fathers (n = 2813) by using a nationally representative sample from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Birth Cohort (ECLS-B), and to test identity theory by examining fathering identity as a primary determinant of fathering role performance. The core premise of identity theory is that society is the main source in shaping self (i.e., identity), and in turn, contributes to the way people behave (Stryker, 1968). The present study tested identity theory by examining the associations between domain-level psychological centralities and domain-specific fathering performances, and also to test whether effects of psychological centralities and contextual factors override those of race and ethnicity. Overall, the results from this study considerably buttressed identity theory. Consistent with the cultural-ecological model (Ogbu, 1981), which posits that ecological conditions shapes culture-specific socialization goals, racial and ethnic differences in the fathering psychological centrality were found because fathers in the same group historically share similar circumstances. However, the heterogeneity of the psychological centrality within each group was remarkable because their current conditions are vastly multifarious. Specifically, the lower their SES, the more likely that they believe that providing for their children is central to their identity as a father. In studying fathers of color, previous approaches often resulted in the unwitting spread of stereotypical images by contrasting minority fathers from at-risk population with middle-class white fathers, because such approaches failed to consider the effects of contextual factors on fathering and to include multiple forms of father involvement. The results from this study clearly show that racial and ethnic differences are subtle once contextual factors are taken into account.

This study used an exploratory cross-sectional structural equation modeling (SEM) design, in which 376 Korean immigrant fathers were administered measures of Father Involvement, Father Identity, Acculturation, Marital Satisfaction, and Religious Commitment and a demographic questionnaire. The surveys were administered primarily in Korean church environments throughout an 18-state region. The primary purposes of this study were to test a model for factors influencing Korean immigrant fathers' involvement with their adolescent children and examine the mediating effect of Father Identity on Father Involvement. This study also aimed at finding the most influential factor on Father Involvement through a general linear model (GLM). The SEM results demonstrated that Father Involvement was influenced by Father Identity directly and by Acculturation and Religious Commitment indirectly, mediated by Father Identity. The GLM results showed that Father Identity was the most influential factor on Father Involvement along with Marital Satisfaction and fathers' participation in fathering-related classes. Practical implications for counselors, limitations of this study, and suggestions for further study were discussed.

Father involvement is critical for youth's development across their lifespan (Barton, Kogan, Cho, and Brown, 2015; Doyle, Clark Goings, Cryer-Coupet, Lombe, Stephens, and Nebbitt, 2017; Passley, Gerring, and Gerson, 2007). Thus, researchers indicate the importance of understanding factors that impact father's involvement. A father's perception of fatherhood and father's identities are two factors that significantly influence father involvement. Additionally, several contextual factors have been highlighted in prior research as impactful of father involvement. However, initial research on fatherhood was conducted primarily with White fathers, therefore informing fatherhood norms based on the experiences of White men. Scholars have advocated more research on fathers of color and an emergence of literature on Black fathers has surfaced. This study aimed to contribute to the fatherhood literature by understanding Black fathers' experiences in constructing their perception of fatherhood and developing their father identities. Of extant literature few studies have sought to understand how father perceptions, identity, and involvement inform each other and change over time. Thus, this study sought to address this gap in the literature. Additionally, 48% of Black children are raised in single-parent homes (United States Census Bureau, 2018). This study aimed to gain insight on fathers from various family of origins experiences on constructing their perceptions, identities, and involvement. A phenomenological qualitative design was utilized to address the aims of this study. Participants in this study included 30 Black fathers who completed semi-structured focus groups. Qualitative results revealed numerous themes encompassing fathers' perceptions, identities, and involvement. Implications for clinicians, researchers, and program developers are discussed.
