Based on the author's childhood, this story follows a family through the first half of the twentieth century in Ohio and West Virginia. The father, an avid spelunker, manages caverns open to the public. The children's lives are filled with fun and adventure, until unknown forces destroy life as they know it. While they had faced tragedy, loss of loved ones, and a bushwhacker's bullet, nothing prepares them for what happens next. When their father struggles to restore order to his family, and the children yearn for what they had lost, a stranger appears and helps bring the magic back into their lives.

How did caveman kids survive and thrive before at the dawn of time when everything was stacked against themThe caveman kids and grandpa were always at the cave while their parents were out hunting or gathering food. After a successful mammoth hunt they bumped into a little lost baby mammoth and changed history. They were now mobile and they had muscle power. But they were up against nature and sometimes nature turned against them, but this time the baby mammoth sounded a warning, and the whole tribe got out of harms way. The baby mammoth had nowhere to go so she joined the herd and kept the kids happy and warm at night. But this is only the beginning: we shell keep an eye on what the caveman kids get up to as the baby mammoth get older and bigger and helps out at the cave.Life In A Cave On The Edge Of A Cliff A long time ago before planes and trains and before buses and bicycles. Even before we rode horses. During a time when everybody walked, "Rock Thrower" and his older sister "Little Leaf" lived with their family in a cave. Their home was on the side of a hill overlooking their beautiful valley. In their little family there was Grandpa and Grandma along with three uncles and two aunties. There were many little children with their own mothers and fathers. It was a big happy family all living together in the safety of the smoke blackened cave. Rock Thrower and Little Leaf's mother and father loved the cave and everybody in it and they somehow managed to keep everybody happy. Home was in a beautiful place, around the cave everything was green. The sky above was a deep rich blue and at night the whole sky was pinpointed with endless lights. It was beautiful to sit outside at night around the fire just looking up at the heavens. Life was good, there was plenty of food but they had to find the berries and bird's eggs. They followed the bees to the sweet juicy honey high in the tree. That was the easy part, now the fun part began. Only the grown-ups would get the honey. And then there was lots of laughter when somebody got stung and started jumping around the place. They all loved the honey, it was a welcome treat. Life in the spring, summer and autumn was good. Especially autumn when there were many fruits and berries to eat. But the good days soon gave way to the cool days of late autumn. Then out came the old hides that were hung over the cave mouth to keep out the cold and now home was a cozy cave.

At the end of World War II, the young girl had no idea she was the answer to a dying old man's prayer when along came a soldier into her life. Whether it was the power of the unknown prayer or the persistence of the soldier, that chance meeting changed her life into a roller coaster ride that was filled with fun and zany antics.Along Came a Soldier is a page turner in the style of June Harman Betts' first two books, Father Was A Caveman and We Were Vagabonds. It recreates the life of an American family immediately following World War II into the turbulent years of the Vietnam War.COMMENTS FROM ACTUAL READERS:I enjoyed June Harman Betts' articles in our local paper for years. Needless to say, I was thrilled to hear that she had written a book. AND WHAT A READ! ...As she did so well in her newspaper articles, she takes us to a place of memories, romance, heart-filled times of joy and sorrow-all while sharing the still unwinding story of our greatest generation. Dianne Cline, Denison University~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~As June Harman Betts pens the true story of the family's history, one becomes riveted by the highlights and heartbreaks of this intriguing family. The reader is drawn into the family's history with her ability to bring back memories of the reader's own bygone days through her vivid description of the various areas of the country where the family lived. One looks forward to her third book as she continues to weave her story with the young girl's marriage to a young soldier and their life together.James Ritchey, Newark, Ohio...Father Was A Caveman was so great, especially when it described days of long ago. I enjoyed it so much and also the sequel, We Were Vagabonds. June Harman Betts is a wonderful author. I could not put the book down. Even though I read it from the library in Petersburg, West Virginia, I had to order my own copy for future generations. Katherine Vance, Amazon.com Reader Review.

What happens to Queen Bees and Wannabes when they grow up? Even the most well-adjusted moms and dads can experience peer pressure and conflicts with other adults that make them act like they’re back in seventh grade. In Queen Bee Moms & Kingpin Dads, Rosalind Wiseman gives us the tools to handle difficult situations involving teachers and other parents with grace. Reassuring, funny, and unfailingly honest, Wiseman reveals: • Why PTA meetings and Back-to-School nights tap into parents’ deepest insecurities • How to recognize the archetypal moms and dads—from Caveman Dad to Hovercraft Mom • How and when to step in and step out of your child’s conflicts with other children, parents, teachers, or coaches • How to interpret the code phrases other parents use to avoid (or provoke) confrontation • Why too many well-meaning dads sit on the sidelines, and how vital it is that they step up to the plate • What to do and say when the playing field becomes an arena for people to bully and dominate other kids and adults • How to have respectful yet honest conversations with other parents about sex and drugs when your values are in conflict • How the way you handle parties, risky behavior, and academic performance affects your child • How unspoken assumptions about race, religion, and other hot-button subjects sabotage parents’ ability to work together Queen Bee Moms & Kingpin Dads is filled with the kind of true stories that made Wiseman’s New York Times bestselling book Queen Bees & Wannabes impossible to put down. There are tales of hardworking parents with whom any of us can identify, along with tales of outrageously bad parents—the kind we all have to reckon with. For instance, what do you do when parents donate a large sum of money to a school and their child is promptly transferred into the honors program–while your son with better grades doesn’t make the cut? What about the mother who helps her daughter compose poison-pen e-mails to yours? And what do you say to the parent-coach who screams at your child when the team is losing? Wiseman offers practical advice on avoiding the most common parenting “land mines” and useful scripts to help you navigate difficult but necessary conversations. Queen Bee Moms & Kingpin Dads is essential reading for parents today. It offers us the tools to become wiser, more relaxed parents–and the inspiration to speak out, act according to our values, show humility, and set the kind of example that will make a real difference in our children’s lives. Also available as a Random House AudioBook and as an eBook

Romulus Ledbetter wasn't always homeless. He once was a devoted husband, father, and musician with a bright future. He now forages for food in the trash cans of the city's better neighborhoods and wages a strenuous one-man war against Cornelius Gould Stuyvesant, an evil -- and imaginary -- power broker who is responsible for society's ills, as well as the sinister Y- and Z-rays that are corrupting humankind. Then one wintry night, Rom finds a corpse at the mouth of his cave that rouses his well-defined sense of ethics and launches him on an obsessive quest for answers. Forced to reconnect with society, Rom leaves his world and journeys through a spiraling web of clues and hunches, straight into a sinister den of money, temptation, and murder--otherwise known as the "civilized" world.
