Asphalt pavement cracking is the most prevalent distress in pavements. In flexible pavements, fatigue cracking is a major cause of deterioration and can significantly reduce the service life of pavements [1]. Fatigue cracking is caused by traffic loading and can be accelerated by aging of the asphalt, freeze-thaw cycles, and poorly designed asphalt concrete mixture. Fatigue resistance of asphalt mixes could be improved by adding Polymer Modified Asphalt Cement (PMAC) [2]. In particular, the use of Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) was found to be an efficient way to increase the fatigue life of mixes [3]. However, the primary issue is the lack of consistent performance testing methods to determine fatigue performance. In addition, the relationship between the PMAC properties and mixture performance is not fully understood. This thesis will focus on the evaluation of asphalt mixes with PMAC using the 4 point-bending beam (4PB) test to determine the fatigue performance of asphalt mixtures. The classical fatigue “WÖHLER'' curve and “DGCB” damage rate method, which was developed at Département Génie Civil et Bâtiment in Lyon, have been used to evaluate and characterize the fatigue of the asphalt mixes in this study. In general, it was found that the fatigue life (Nf50%) was improved when Polymer Modified Asphalt Cement was used, and the polymer content increased. Both fatigue analysis methods, by WÖHLER curve and the DGCB method, showed that the addition of SBS polymer improved the fatigue life and reduced the damage from fatigue loading. Finally, some recommendations were made with regards to fatigue testing.

Fatigue Life Characterization Of Superpave Mixtures At The Virginia Smart Road written by Imad L. Al-Qadi and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Pavements, Asphalt categories.

Laboratory fatigue testing was performed on six Superpave HMA mixtures in use at the Virginia Smart Road. Evaluation of the applied strain and resulting fatigue life was performed to fit regressions to predict the fatigue performance of each mixture. Differences in fatigue performance due to field and laboratory production and compaction methods were investigated. Also, in-situ mixtures were compared to mixtures produced accurately from the job mix formula to determine if changes occurring between the laboratory and batch plant significantly affected fatigue life. Results from the fatigue evaluation allowed verification of several hypotheses related to mixture production and compaction and fatigue performance. It was determined that location within the pavement surface, such as inner or outer wheelpath or center-of-lane, did not significantly affect laboratory fatigue test results, although the location will have significant effects on in-situ fatigue life. Also the orientation of samples cut from an in-situ pavement (parallel or perpendicular to the direction of traffic) had only a minor effect on the laboratory fatigue life, because the variability inherent in the pavement due to material variability is greater than the variability induced by compaction. Fatigue life of laboratory-compacted samples was found to be greater than fatigue life of field-compacted samples; additionally, the variability of the laboratory compacted mixture was found to be less than that of the field-compacted samples. However, it was also found that batch-plant production significantly reduces specimen variability as compared to small-batch laboratory production when the same laboratory compaction is used on both specimen sets. Finally, for Smart Road mixtures produced according to the job mix formula, the use of polymer-modified binder or stone matrix asphalt was shown to increase the expected fatigue life. However, results for all mixes indicated that fatigue resistance rankings might change depending on the applied strain level. This study contributes to the understanding of the factors involved in fatigue performance of asphalt mixtures. Considering that approximately 95% of Virginia's interstate and primary roadways incorporate asphalt surface mixtures, and that fatigue is a leading cause of deterioration, gains in the understanding of fatigue processes and prevention have great potential payoff by improving both the mixture and pavement design practices.

Fatigue Analysis Of Asphalt Concrete Under Indirect Tensile Mode Of Loading Using Crack Images written by Manh Tuan Nguyen and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Crack image categories.

In this study, various fatigue criteria for indirect tensile (IDT) fatigue tests were evaluated and a new approach to identify the fatigue failure was proposed based on a crack-length criterion. The IDT fatigue tests were conducted to characterize the fatigue behavior of various asphalt mixtures, such as three warm mix asphalt mixtures and a polymer-modified asphalt mixture. During the IDT tests, digital cameras were mounted to monitor crack growth on the both faces of a specimen. Existing three fatigue failure criteria were evaluated regarding to fatigue-crack development. Then, a crack-length limit was proposed as a fatigue criterion. The IDT strength tests were also conducted to determine fracture energy of the mixtures. Based on the new fatigue criterion, a fatigue performance model was constituted with dissipated and fracture energy parameters. The fatigue model proposed in this study successfully predicted the fatigue lives of the mixtures with a high level of accuracy. The main advantage of this fatigue model is that it does not need a transfer function to convert the fatigue life to crack length or area, because fatigue-crack length is directly determined from the crack-length limit.

Ohio Department of Transportation has adopted the hot mix asphalt concrete containing polymer modifiers for use in the interstate highway pavement. Among the various reasons cited for the adoption of polymer modifiers are the favorable field experiences by ODOT, extensive literatures reporting enhanced performance, such as rutting resistance, low temperature thermal cracking resistance, and possibly fatigue endurance. However, despite these favorable findings, there are still cases involving premature failure of hot mixtures containing polymer modifiers. Concerns regarding optimum polymer content, compatibility between polymer additives and asphalt cement, proper mixing and compaction procedure remain to be resolved. Furthermore, performance based specifications to ensure production of desirable final asphalt concrete product require additional development. Questions regarding the suitability of Superpave binder testing procedures for the polymer-modified binders need to be clarified.

Long And Deep Tunnels written by Vittorio Guglielmetti and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-15 with Technology & Engineering categories.

The design and construction of “long and deep” tunnels, i.e. tunnels under mountains, characterised by either considerable length and/or overburden, represent a considerable challenge. The scope of this book is not to instruct how to design and construct such tunnels but to share a method to identify the potential hazards related to the process of designing and constructing long and deep tunnels, to produce a relevant comprehensive analysis and listing, to quantify the probability and consequences, and to design proper mitigation measures and countermeasures. The design, developed using probabilistic methods, is verified during execution by means of the so called Plan for Advance of the Tunnel (PAT) method, which allows adapting the design and control parameters of the future stretches of the tunnel to the results of the stretches already finished, using the monitoring data base. Numerous criteria are given to identify the key parameters, necessary for the PAT procedure. Best practices of excavation management with the help of real time monitoring and control are also provided. Furthermore cost and time evaluation systems are analysed. Finally, contractual aspects related to construction by contract are investigated, for best development and application of models more appropriate for tunnelling-construction contracts. The work will be of interest to practising engineers, designers, consultants and students in mining, underground, tunnelling, transportation and construction engineering, as well as to foundation and geological engineers, urban planners/developers and architects.
