The objective of this research was to investigate the initiation and progression of damage which develops in notched (0/90) sub 2S SCS-6/Ti-15-3 at elevated temperature. Testing consisted of a monotonic tensile test at 427 deg C followed by fatigue testing performed under load control with a stress ratio of 0.1 at a frequency of 10 Hz. A crack was defined to have initiated when it had attained a length greater than or equal to 0.124 mm. Crack initiation and progression was monitored by strain and modulus observations and visual inspection via telemicroscope. The cracks were recorded with edge and face replicas. Metallographic and fractographic analysis was performed after specimen failure. Fatigue cracks initiated in the matrix at four locations on the front and back faces of each specimen. Two of these cracks became through-cracks and eventually developed into major cracks which caused the fracture. The applied stress (S) and fatigue lives (N) curves for both initiation and fatigue life were established. Also, crack growth curves as the function of fatigue cycles were established. A detailed metallographic analysis was performed to understand the damage mechanisms and its implication on the observed notched fatigue behavior.

This research extends the existing knowledge of MMC fatigue damage mechanisms by studying the tension-compression fatigue behavior of a notched cross-ply laminate MMC at elevated temperature. A (0/90)25 SCS-6/Ti-15-3 laminate with a center hole was subjected to tension-compression fatigue at 427 deg C (800 deg F). Stress and strain data was taken to evaluate macro-mechanic behavior of the material. Microscopy and fractography were performed to characterize the damage on a micro-mechanical level. Crack initiation and progression was monitored using acetate face replicas. Four cracks were found to develop around the periphery of the hole, two of which became dominant and proceeded through to the end of the specimen. On a maximum applied stress basis, tension-compression notched specimens had shorter fatigue lives than tension-tension notched specimens. Also, tension-compression adds more damage due to the compressive portion of the loading, and tension-compression loading increased the time to crack initiation for a given maximum stress and increased the rate of crack propagation over tension-tension cases. (MM).

The purpose was to characterize damage initiation and growth in notched titanium matrix composites at room temperature. Double edge notched or center open hole SCS-6/Ti-15-3 specimens containing 0 deg plies or containing both 0 and 90 deg plies were fatigued. The specimens were tested in the as-fabricated (ASF) and in heat-treated conditions. A local strain criterion using unnotched specimen fatigue data was successful in predicting fatigue damage initiation. The initiation stress level was accurately predicted for both a double edge notched unidirectional specimen and a cross-plied center hole specimen. The fatigue produced long multiple cracks growing from the notches. These fatigue cracks were only in the matrix material and did not break the fibers in their path. The combination of matrix cracking and fiber/matrix debonding appears to greatly reduce the stress concentration around the notches. The laminates that were heat treated showed a different crack growth pattern. In the ASF specimens, matrix cracks had a more tortuous path and showed considerable more crack branching. For the same specimen geometry and cyclic stress, the (0/90/0) laminate with a hole had far superior fatigue resistance than the matrix only specimen with a hole. Naik, R. A. and Johnson, W. S.
