Eye of the Storm: William Faulkner's Flags in the Dust, upholds William Faulkner's artistic compromise for material necessity. It studies the effect of the editing on themes, imagery, plot structure, transitions, centers, openings, endings, characters and the socio-historical publication contexts of William Faulkner's Flags in the Dust to draw delightfully startling conclusions. Faulkner allowed his agent to edit and significantly reduce his third novel, Flags in the Dust, published as Sartoris in 1929. Until his death, Faulkner never referred to his third novel as Sartoris, but as Flags, finally published posthumously in 1973. Honoring Faulkner's greatness by refusing to limit his writing to the constraints of a single critical discipline, Eye of the Storm synthesizes several theories in relation to their relevant interaction with the dimensions of Faulkner's writing. This original and flexible response to exigent critical theories also offers a method for all comparative manuscript studies - literary or otherwise.

William Faulkner written by Cleanth Brooks and has been published by LSU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1989-12-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

In this companion volume to William Faulkner: The Yoknapatawpha Country, Cleanth Brooks takes an in-depth look at Faulkner's early poetry and prose as well as his five non-Yoknapatawpha novels -- Soldiers Pay, Mosquitoes, Pylon, The Wild Palms, and A Fable. Brooks also offers relevant clarification of some of his earlier interpretations of Faulkner that have been challenged -- most notably in the case of Faulkner that have been challenged -- most notable in the case of Absalom, Absalom!, which he considers Faulkner's greatest novel. Recognizing that the creative and imaginative center of Faulkner's art is Yoknapatawpha County, Brooks examines the merits of each of the works set beyond these boundaries and explores how these writings complement Faulkner as an artist. He sheds light on the literary sources that influenced Faulkner's early work and the technical innovations and general themes Faulkner was to develop in his later writing. The notes and appendixes with which Brooks concludes Toward Yoknapatawpha and Beyond serve only to amplify this comprehensive study.

Faulkner S Artistic Vision written by Ryūichi Yamaguchi and has been published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Literary Criticism categories.

Although William Faulkner's imagination is often considered solely tragic, it actually blended what Faulkner himself called the bizarre and the terrible. Not only did Faulkner's vision encompass both comedy and tragedy; it perceived a latent humor in tragedy and vice versa. As a result, Faulkner's fiction is seldom simply comic or simply tragic. Faulkner's comedy incorporates tragedy and despair, and the humor in his novels may serve as well to intensify as to relieve a tragic or horrific effect. This study examines Faulkner's first nine novels, from Soldiers' Pay to Absalom, Absalom!, showing how humor is used to express theme: how it appears in the action, characters, and discourse of each novel; and how it contributes to the overall effect of each novel. In each case, even in the most pained and angry novels, Faulkner's practice of humor expresses his view that humor is an inseparable element of human experience. Ryuichi Yamaguchi is Professor of English and American literature at the Aichi University in Japan.
