"The goal of this volume is to bring together the most recent empirical and theoretical developments in the basic science of fear learning and to translate these developments to the clinical understanding and treatment of fears and phobias. A major impetus for the volume was the recognition that basic science in fear learning is advancing far more rapidly than the clinical application of this knowledge. The book is structured to cover three main areas. The first presents the history of fear learning theory and fear measurement. The second area examines the acquisition and maintenance of fear, including neural circuitry, associative pathways, and cognitive mechanisms; the role of avoidance; and individual differences in fear learning. The third area covers the extinction, renewal, and reinstatement of fear, including neural circuitry and context dependency. The volume developed out of the Special Interest Meeting on Fear and Learning in Lignely, Belgium (May 2003), sponsored by the Fund for Scientific Research in Flanders, Belgium, and inspired by Paul Eelen. This volume is intended for both basic scientists and clinical scientists at undergraduate, graduate, and more advanced levels, as well as practicing clinicians who are interested in gaining an in-depth understanding of learning theory as it applies to fear and anxiety"--Preface. For the last eight years, James and Kate have been working together to design, implement and evaluate a whole-school, evidence-informed approach to teaching and learning known as Learning Skills. An eight-year study with the University of Cambridge revealed that Learning Skills led to significant gains in subject learning, with rapid gains among students from disadvantaged backgrounds. In this practical guide for teachers and school leaders, James and Kate reveal a recipe for success rooted in three key concepts: metacognition (reflecting on learning); self-regulation (taking ownership over the learning process); and oracy (developing high-quality speaking and listening skills). This is a book about what happened when a small team of teachers seized an opportunity to provide their students with the knowledge, the skills and the confidence to take control of their own learning. This journey began with a question: how and what would we teach, if there was no one watching? On the other side of fear is the teacher you want to be, and the children you'd like to teach...

Fear Learning Predicts Traditional Avoidance And Impulsive Regulatory Behaviors In Daily Life written by Pallavi Aurora and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022 with categories.

Fear and anxiety disorders are characterized by rapid fear acquisition and deficits in fear extinction resulting in excessive and persistent negative emotional experiences. Avoidance behaviors are commonly used to dampen these negative affective experiences. The relationship between fear learning and avoidance behaviors can be best understood through principles of classical and operant learning. This relationship has been examined in laboratory settings and used to inform treatments (e.g., exposure therapy), yet no known studies have tested how these associations translate into daily life in humans. Thus, the current study sought to fill this gap in the literature by unpacking the relationship between individual differences in fear acquisition and extinction predicting the engagement of two sets of avoidance behaviors, traditional avoidance behaviors and impulsive regulatory behaviors in daily life. Participants completed a fear conditioning paradigm, working memory task, and 14 days of experience sampling. Results suggest that fear acquisition slope predicted traditional avoidance behaviors and combined behaviors. Results also suggest that fear extinction slope was approaching significance when predicting traditional avoidance and combined behaviors, however, fear extinction slope was not a significant predictor of impulsive regulatory behaviors. Lastly, the addition of working memory was not a significant predictor of any of the behaviors. Taken together, these results have potential for improving treatments by highlighting the importance of understanding the influence of both fear acquisition and fear extinction predicting avoidance behaviors.

Fear And Learning In America written by John Kuhn and has been published by Teachers College Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with Education categories.

In this provocative book, "America's Superintendent," John Kuhn lays bare the scare tactics at the root of the modern school reform movement. Kuhn conveys a deeply held passion for the mission and promise of public education through his own experience as a school adminiistrator in Texas. When his "Alamo Letter" first appeared in the Washington Post, it galvanized the educational community in a call to action that was impossible to ignore. This powerful book requires us to question whether the current education crisis will be judged by history as a legitimate national emergency or an agenda-driven panic, spurred on by a media that is, for the most part, uninterested in anything but useless soundbites.
