A brilliant and insightful exploration of the rise and fall of the American middle class by New York Times bestselling author, Barbara Ehrenreich. One of Barbara Ehrenreich's most classic and prophetic works, Fear of Falling closely examines the insecurities of the American middle class in an attempt to explain its turn to the right during the last two decades of the 20th century. Weaving finely-tuned expert analysis with her trademark voice, Ehrenreich traces the myths about the middle class to their roots, determines what led to the shrinking of what was once a healthy percentage of the population, and how, in its ambition and anxiety, that population has retreated from responsible leadership. Newly reissued and timely as ever, Fear of Falling places the middle class of yesterday under the microscope and reveals exactly how we arrived at the middle class of today.

"Falls are a common health issue among the elderly. As Americans are growing older and living longer it is important to help them live independently as long as they can. With approximately 39.6 million Americans aged 65 years and older, 40-73% of them have a fear of falling. The fear of falling can have negative consequences and cause the elderly to limit their physical activities. This is why it is important for primary health care providers to incorporate a tool into yearly physical examinations about this fear. It has been shown that the elderly who have fallen or have the fear of falling do not discuss this problem with their family members or their care provider. The elderly fear if they discuss their falls they will be institutionalized and lose their freedom. With appropriate screening, those who have a fear of falling can be identified and those issues they have can be addressed at that point in time. The Falls Efficacy Scale-International (FES-I) is a 16 point questionnaire that measures activities on different levels that can cause fear among the elderly. This scale has been validated to offer excellent reliability and sensitivity in the fear of falling with clinical interventions. This field study looks at the fear of falling using the FES-I tools for those aged 65 years and older who lived in a senior complex within the city where the study took place. There was a direct correlation found with increasing age and an increase in the fear of falling. With the help of primary care providers, nursing education and further research into this topic, interventions can be discussed to help alleviate this fear and help the elderly live independently longer. I can't remember the last time I felt completely safe. Security seemed more like a luxury to me, reserved for those who were fortunate enough to have picture perfect childhoods. For those who didn't bear the ugly scars that keep me bound in constant, debilitating fear. I've run from that fear my entire life. But when I met him, for once, I couldn't run anymore. He scared the hell out of me in a way that excited every fiber of my being. It wasn't the tattoos or the piercings. It wasn't the warmth that seemed to radiate from his frame and blanket me whenever he was near. It was just...him. The scary beautiful man that threatened to alter 23 years of routine and rituals, and make me face my crippling fear. My name is Kami and I am constantly afraid. And the thing that scares me the most is the very thing I want. "Don't worry," he smiled, pulling me into the hard warmth of his chest. "I've got you. I'll always catch you when you fall." And just like that, Blaine had staked his claim on the untouched part of me that no living soul had ever moved. He had captured every fear, every reservation, and crushed them in the palm of his inked hand. *** This book deals with sensitive subjects such as domestic violence and sexual abuse. Not intended for readers under 17 years of age.

The purpose of this cross-sectional exploratory survey was to examine the effects of fear of falling and other related factors on older adults’ intention to undertake strength and balance training (SBT) for fall prevention. Forty-three participants between the ages of 53 and 97 were surveyed using validated measures of fear of falling, kinesiophobia, and the theory of planned behavior constructs. Data analysis included a bivariate (Pearson) correlation done to determine the intercorrelation between the study variables. A multiple linear regression analysis was then conducted to determine the extent to which the independent variables explained the variance in the intention to undertake SBT, and the number of days the participants currently engage in SBT. The analysis revealed that the intention to participate in SBT was significantly predicted by attitude, subjective norm, and knowledge about the benefits of SBT. No significant relationship was found between the fear of falling and the intention to engage in SBT. However, the fear of pain due to movement (kinesiophobia) and the number of hours worked by the participants significantly predicted the number of days they currently engage in SBT. The findings from this study are insightful and provide useful knowledge that could inform health promotion messaging for fall prevention and for promoting exercise behavior in older adults. Future research should further explore the relationship between kinesiophobia, fear of falling, and falls in a more representative sample of seniors.
