As a fourth grader at Holy Cross Grammar School, Matt Weber asked his religion teacher why St. Francis was often pictured with holes in his hands and feet. Description of Catholic vs. ProtestantThe Stigmata & Padre Pio is a Christian book with chapters on phenomenon like the stigmata and controversial issues that often get no press or the wrong information. There are some major differences between Catholic and Protestant viewpoints of Christianity. What is the stigmata & Padre Pio? Pio (Catholic priest) is not well known among Catholics, much less Protestants. The Stigmata is a stunning and supernatural phenomenon where living saints bleed and suffer pain regularly through the same wounds as Christ. Padre Pio is not the only stigmatist. Theresa Neumann and Padre Pio are two modern stigmatists whose wounds were verified by photographs and medical examinations. Before 1900, as many as 320 stigmatists (besides Francis of Assisi) were documented by a French doctor. It is not a fluke or rare phenomenon, more have occurred since then. The difference of Catholic vs. Protestant can be vastly significant here. Some believe the bleeding and suffering is "not of God" in spite of evidence from photographs and medical examinations. They contend it is not God's will that we have to suffer because Christ did it all for us...there is no redemption in our suffering. The difference of Catholic and Protestant boils down to authority...the Bible or the Church. How we got the Bible was from the Church, not vice versa. Belief, by Catholics in the real presence of God in Holy Eucharist is also a major difference. The vast majority of Protestants believe Christianity is based upon the Bible and everything we need to know is there. Holy Eucharist seems skipped over in Scripture or discarded by Protestants. Fortunately the view of the Catholic on abortion is frequently agreed upon by Protestants. Authority: Protestants believe the Bible is the only authority for Christians. Historical evidenced and the Bible itself contradict this. What is the Word of God (Bible) and where and how we got it needs explanation regarding "authority". Other issues covered are: spirit soul & body...the essence & dynamics of man, how to be filled with the Holy Spirit, how Christians can also have demons. Catholic symbols (statues), the uncorrupted body of saints, guidance from God, spiritual tools of God, fear vs. faith, devotion to Virgin Mary and eleven dimensions of God vs. our four. In 1224 St. Francis had his stigmata, the first stigmata in history. These spontaneous bleeding wounds, which model those of the crucified Jesus, can be considered a symptom of conversion-hysteria. According to Freud's concept of hysteria, the body, through the symptom, conveys the message of an underlying conflict, which is primarily sexual, an outcry of frustrated femininity. The stigmata of St. Francis raises two major questions: that of the psychological makeup to enable the development of such a hysterical symptom, and that of the historical context which institutionalized a bodily manifestation to answer the needs and conflicts of its time. This book answers both questions through the use of the same psychoanalytic model.

During the last decades of the nineteenth century, Charles Darwin, Thomas Henry Huxley, Walter Pater and others changed the nature of thought concerning the human body and the physical environment that had shaped it. In response, the 1890s saw the publication of a series of remarkable literary works that had their genesis in the intense scientific and aesthetic activity of those preceding decades—texts that emphasized themes of degeneration and were themselves stylistically decompositive, with language both a surrogate for physical deformity and a source of anxiety. Susan J. Navarette examines the ways in which scientific and cultural concerns of late nineteenth-century England are coded in the horror literature of the period. By contextualizing the structural, stylistic, and thematic systems developed by writers seeking to reenact textually the entropic forces they perceived in the natural world, Navarette reconstructs the late Victorian mentalité. She analyzes aesthetic responses to trends in contemporary science and explores horror writers' use of scientific methodologies to support their perception that a long-awaited period of cultural decline had begun. In her analysis of the classics Turn of the Screw and Heart of Darkness, Navarette shows how James and Conrad made artistic use of earlier "scientific" readings of the body. Managing Fear examines the growing use of risk assessment as it relates to preventive detention and supervision schemes for offenders perceived to be at a high risk of re-offending, individuals with severe mental illness, and suspected terrorists. It outlines a number of legislative regimes in common law countries that have broadened ‘civil’ (as opposed to criminal) powers of detention and supervision. Drawing on the disciplines of criminology and social psychology, it explores how and why such schemes reflect a move towards curtailing liberty before harm results rather than after a crime has occurred. Human rights and ethical issues concerning the role of mental health practitioners in assessing risk for the purposes of preventive detention and supervision are explored, and regimes that require evidence from mental health practitioners are compared with those that rely on decision-makers’ notions of ‘reasonable belief’ concerning the risk of harm. Case studies are used to exemplify some of the issues relating to how governments have attempted to manage the fear of future harm.
