A novel tool to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of an open loop geothermal district heating systemhas been developed in MATLAB-App Designer. The GeoDH Tool has been thought to be modular and adaptable to different demands and production of thermal energy. Therefore, the user can edit several parameters to assess the hypothetical facility. Regarding the extraction section, the water drawdown in the drilling as well as the doublet distance and the pumping requirements have been evaluated concerningthe design flowrate. Then, the thermal exchange and pressure drop in the district heating loop was calculated in a simplified way. Due to the low temperature of the source, a vapour compression heat pump is needed to meet the thermal requirements in the consumer section. With the aim of validating the tool, a case of study has been selected. TheInstitut Cartogràfic i Geològic de Catalunya (ICGC)has provided data ofa low enthalpy geothermal resource from a shallow hydrothermal aquifer in Sant Cugar del Vallès (Catalonia) has been assessed. In parallel, the thermal loads for heating and DHW from a prototype neighbourhood in Rubí has been simulated.730households, 20 commercial premises and one school have been identified as the consumption target, sited 5 km away from the source. An economic evaluation has been performed to test the feasibility, by calculating NPV, IIR, payback time and LCOH.

The existence of a recently-recognized, low-temperature, geothermal resource under central and western Nebraska represents a potential alternate energy source. The feasibility of using that resource for space heating and cooling at Nebraska Western College, Scottsbluff, Nebraska, as an alternative to that facility's current, natural-gas fired, heating and cooling system is explored. This study addresses: (1) the geological (hydrological) aspects of such a project; (2) the retrofitting requirements for modifying the existing heating plants to accommodate the geothermal resource; (3) the possible use of shallow, unconfined groundwater with heat pumps as another energy alternative; and (4) the economic costs and benefits of both deep and shallow-water hydrothermal application.

An initial feasibility study of using existing culinary water supply systems to provide hot water for space heating and air conditioning to a typical residential community is reported. The Phase I study has centered on methods of using low-to-moderate temperature water for heating purposes including institutional barriers, identification and description of a suitable residential commnity water system, evaluation of thermal losses in both the main distribution system and the street mains within the residential district, estimation of size and cost of the pumping station main heat exchanger, sizing of individual residential heat exchangers, determination of pumping and power requirements due to increased flow through the residential area mains, and pumping and power requirements from the street mains through a typical residence. All results of the engineering study of Phase I are encouraging.

The purpose of this study is to determine the technical and economic feasibility of constructing and operating a district heating system to serve the residential, commercial, and public sectors in Thermopolis. The project geothermal resource assessment, based on reviews of existing information and data, indicated that substantial hot water resources likely exist in the Rose Dome region 10 miles northeast of Thermopolis, and with quantities capable of supporting the proposed geothermal uses. Preliminary engineering designs were developed to serve the space heating and hot water heating demands for buildings in the Thermopolis-East Thermopolis town service area. The heating district design is based on indirect geothermal heat supply and includes production wells, transmission lines, heat exchanger units, and the closed loop distribution and collection system necessary to serve the individual customers. Three options are presented for disposal of the cooled waters-reinjection, river disposal, and agricultural reuse. The preliminary engineering effort indicates the proposed system is technically feasible. The design is sized to serve 1545 residences, 190 businesses, and 24 public buildings. The peak design meets a demand of 128.2 million Btu at production rates of 6400 gpm.

Rising pollution, climate change and the depletion of fossil fuels are leading many countries to focus on renewable-based energy conversion systems. In particular, recently introduced energy policies are giving high priority to increasing the use of renewable energy sources, the improvement of energy systems’ security, the minimization of greenhouse gas effect, and social and economic cohesion. Renewable energies’ availability varies during the day and the seasons and so their use must be accurately predicted in conjunction with the management strategies based on load shifting and energy storage. Thus, in order to reduce the criticalities of this uncertainty, the exploitation of more flexible and stable renewable energies, such as the geothermal one, is necessary. Geothermal energy is an abundant renewable source with significant potential in direct use applications, such as in district heating systems, in indirect use ones to produce electricity, and in cogeneration and polygeneration systems for the combined production of power, heating, and cooling energy. This Special Issue includes geothermal energy utilization and the technologies used for its exploitation considering both the direct and indirect use applications.

This book describes origin and characteristics of the Earth’s thermal field, thermal flow propagation and some thermal phenomena in the Earth. Description of thermal properties of rocks and methods of thermal field measurements in boreholes, underground, at near-surface conditions enables to understand the principles of temperature field acquisition and geothermal model development. Processing and interpretation of geothermal data are shown on numerous field examples from different regions of the world. The book warps, for instance, such fields as analysis of thermal regime of the Earth’s crust, evolution and thermodynamic conditions of the magma-ocean and early Earth atmosphere, thermal properties of permafrost, thermal waters, geysers and mud volcanoes, methods of Curie discontinuity construction, quantitative interpretation of thermal anomalies, examination of some nonlinear effects, and integration of geothermal data with other geophysical methods. This book is intended for students and researchers in the field of Earth Sciences and Environment studying thermal processes in the Earth and in the subsurface. It will be useful for specialists applying thermal field analysis in petroleum, water and ore geophysics, environmental and ecological studies, archaeological prospection and climate of the past.
