Abstract: ABSTRACT This thesis describes the development of an intelligent feature-based design system EXPO (EXpert Process planning Object-oriented system) for integrating the CAD and CAPP functions in the design and manufacturing of prismatic machined parts. This research was organized into two phases. The first phase was to develop an interactive design environment for part specification in terms of volumetric machining features, while the second phase involved the establishment of a process planning system to convert the feature information to the corresponding machining processes and generate the NC part program. EXPO has been implemented by integrating an expert system development tool CLIPS (C Language Integrated Production System) with the solid modeller AME (Advanced Modelling Extension) of AutoCAD. The integration provides a foundation platform for knowledge processing. EXPO has employed a hybrid approach for knowledge representation by combining rule-based and object-oriented approaches. Thus, the knowledge based system can transparently access the geometric information and dynamically infer the knowledge from the geometric database for automatic reasoning. In EXPO, geometric reasoning has been successfully incorporated into the feature- based design system to detect and resolve feature interactions. EXPO takes the volume and surface information from the solid modeller and uses geometric reasoning to evaluate the feature interactions. Feature interactions may change the feature types and forms as well as the process sequence for producing the part. Feature-based design systems which cannot detect and resolve feature interactions are too restrictive for practical uses because the downstream applications are totally relied on the accuracy of the feature information. Thus, the systematic evaluation of feature interactions is one of the most ii essential feature-based functions. It constitutes the basis for validating the machining features in each design step, and is the key to guarantee that a part will be produced as it is designed in the design-for-manufacture environment. iii DOI: 10.5353/th_b3009877 Subjects: CAD/CAM systems

This is an invaluable five-volume reference on the very broad and highly significant subject of computer aided and integrated manufacturing systems. It is a set of distinctly titled and well-harmonized volumes by leading experts on the international scene. The techniques and technologies used in computer aided and integrated manufacturing systems have produced, and will no doubt continue to produce, major annual improvements in productivity, which is defined as the goods and services produced from each hour of work. This publication deals particularly with more effective utilization of labor and capital, especially information technology systems. Together the five volumes treat comprehensively the major techniques and technologies that are involved.

The field of solid modeling has developed a variety of techniques for unambiguous representations of three-dimensional objects. Feature recognition is a sub-discipline of solid modeling that focuses on the design and implementation of algorithms for detecting manufacturing information from solid models produced by computer-aided design (CAD) systems. Examples of this manufacturing information include features such as holes, slots, pockets, steps and other shapes that can be created on modern computer numerically controlled machining systems. Feature recognition has been an interesting research area in solid modeling for a few decades and is considered to be a critical link for integration of CAD and CAM. It is a necessary component of an integrated Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) environment to automatically recognize manufacturing features from a CAD data base or solid model. In this book a methodology for recognizing some of the machining features has been presented. The computational issues involved in building tractable and scalable solutions for automated feature recognition have also been addressed.

Please note this is a Short Discount publication. Process planning involves creating detailed plans of the manufacturing steps and equipment necessary to produce a finished part. Using the variant method, CAPP groups families of parts by a structured classification and coding plan. This report summarizes the state–of–the–art and future trends in the area of CAPP. The computer is a vital part of the process planning function, which includes two different approaches. One is called the variant (similar part) method of process planning and the other is generative (expert system–based). Both will produce similar process plans. Most computer applications, however, are of the variant type, because the software is easier to develop and new process plans are based on previous ones.
