Este trabalho, resultado do trabalho de dissertação de mestrado da autora, utilizando-se de referências da Psicologia Social, procurou analisar a construção da identidade de Roberto, um indivíduo negro, vítima de abandono. Roberto fez parte da primeira geração de crianças abandonadas e criadas na FEBEM, lugar em que viveu até os 16 anos. Foi morador em situação de rua. Passou por vários distritos policiais e, finalmente, recebeu uma sentença penal a ser cumprida no Carandiru. Após cumprir sete anos de detenção, foi libertado.Retomou os estudos. Cursou Pedagogia na Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso. Fez mestrado e doutorado em Educação na Universidade de São Paulo. Atualmente, é professor dessa universidade, seus escritos e palestras são voltados para a área da criança e adolescente em alto risco social, para presidiários e sobre direitos humanos. Sua história determinou o problema de pesquisa — compreender a construção da identidade de Roberto, através da narrativa de sua história de vida, identificando acontecimentos que favoreceram transformações de sua identidade. Como método, foi realizada uma pesquisa qualitativa. As entrevistas foram complementadas por notas de campo levantadas a partir de palestras de Roberto, além de dados levantados em seu livro, decorrente de sua tese de doutorado. Os resultados sugerem que ter projetos fez Roberto suportar as condições adversas. Aliou indignação, rebeldia e disciplina. Sua história mostra que passaram por sua vida muitas pessoas significativas que, não somente serviram de modelos, mas forneceram um contexto de plausibilidade para suas transformações identitárias.
