Major Concepts In Spanish Feminist Theory written by Roberta Johnson and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-09 with Social Science categories.

First book in English to offer a thorough introduction to key concepts and figures in Spanish feminist thought. Major Concepts in Spanish Feminist Theory is the first book in English to offer a substantial overview of Spanish feminist thought. It focuses on six concepts—solitude, personality, social class, work, difference, and equality—and distinguishes Spanish feminist theory from that of other countries. Roberta Johnson employs a chronological format to highlight continuity and polemics in Spanish feminist thinking from the eighteenth century to the present. She brings together arguments from well-known names such as Benito Jerónimo Feijoo, Concepción Arenal, Emilia Pardo Bazán, María Martínez Sierra, Carmen de Burgos, and Carmen Laforet, as well as less familiar figures such as the Countess Campo Alange María Laffitte and Lilí Álvarez, who defied restrictions on feminist activity during the Franco dictatorship to publish feminist books. The topics of difference and equality are explored, and the book recounts the long tension between theorists of each persuasion—a tension that erupted publicly during Spain’s democratic era. Each theorist’s arguments are laid out in straightforward, non-jargonistic prose, making this book a useful classroom tool for courses on Spanish women writers, Spanish culture, and cross-cultural feminist studies. Roberta Johnson is Professor Emerita of Spanish at the University of Kansas and teaches in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of California at Los Angeles. She has written several books, including Spanish Women Writers and Spain’s Civil War (coedited with Maryellen Bieder).

The Ethics Of Autobiography written by Angel G. Loureiro and has been published by Vanderbilt University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with Authors, Exiled categories.

After laying out these theoretical foundations, Loureiro puts them to work in analyzing four of the most fascinating autobiographies written by Spanish exiles: The Life of Joseph Blanco White, who lived from 1775 to 1841, Memoria de la Melancolia by Maria Teresa Leon (1904-1988), Coto vedado and En los reinos de taifa by Juan Goytisolo (born 1931), and Literature or Life by Jorge Semprun (born 1923). The lives of these authors, all of whom were exiled for political reasons, were disrupted by some of the most crucial events in Spain's tortuous road to modernity and democracy. The book closes with a discussion of why there have been so few critical examinations of autobiographies written in modern Spain. Loureiro proposes that, even in today's Spain, stifling social and political forces smother ethical responsibility, which is an essential ingredient in creating autobiographies that dare to be more than a humdrum inventory of personal recollections.

This book explores the figure of the modernwoman in the writings of Federica Montseny (1905-1994), a prominent Spanish anarchist leader during the 1920s and 1930s. This book explores the figure of the modern woman in the essays and fiction of Federica Montseny (1905-1994), a prominent Spanish anarchist leader during the 1920s and 1930s. It examines in depth the author's theories of genderin light of the basic principles of anarchist political thought and philosophy. In addition, Montseny's novels are shown to engage in an elaborate and critical dialogue with scientific and cultural discourses on women that proliferated during the first four decades of the 20th century. Montseny's ideal modern woman is not a static and definite figure; rather, she shifts across different and at times contradictory articulations that, nonetheless, all fall within her anarchist beliefs. Montseny, a popular politician and writer during her time, developed and disseminated some of the most original concepts dealing with women's emancipation and gender theory, and the present volume is the first to situate her thought as a key component within the evolution of Spanish feminism.. Nuria Cruz-Cámara is Professor of Spanish at the University of Tennessee.
