[English]:The complex life of Frederick of Aragon, second-born of Ferdinando I of Naples, is analyzed through a work of decomposition and interpretation of the data that concern to the political, cultural and ideological physiognomy of a character considered marginal in the the dramatic Italian events of the end of the XV century. Frederick represents instead, in his formation and his roles, the extraordinary experiment that was the Aragonese system of government, and the meaning of a whole political civilization: the Renaissance of the specula principis, of the political art, that can show once more the measure of its inexhaustible originality through the reconstruction of lives as this, transversals, uniques and deeply absorbed in the practice of the power./ [Italiano]:La complessa vicenda esistenziale di Federico d’Aragona, secondogenito di Ferdinando I di Napoli, viene analizzata attraverso un lento lavoro di scomposizione e interpretazione dei dati che attengono alla fisionomia politica, culturale e ideologica di un personaggio fino a ieri considerato marginale nel quadro dei drammatici eventi italiani di fine secolo XV.

./[English]: This volume has the same title of the one published in 2011. It collects a series of studies on the long reign of the second Trastàmara King of Naples, Ferdinand of Aragon (1458-1494), using mainly the great mass of information offered by diplomatic correspondences. The authors study some key events and protagonists of Italian history in the Quattrocento (the battle of Ponza, the condottiero Giacomo Piccinino, the journey of Lorenzo de’ Medici to Naples, the war of Ferrara) and important topics about politics and political communication: the relations between the Crown, the society and the fiscal institutions; the use of italian language in the autograph letters written by Lluís Dezpuig, a catalan; the “queenship” of the duchess of Ferrara.

The Geniza merchants of the eleventh-century Mediterranean - sometimes called the 'Maghribi traders' - are central to controversies about the origins of long-term economic growth and the institutional bases of trade. In this book, Jessica Goldberg reconstructs the business world of the Geniza merchants, maps the shifting geographic relationships of the medieval Islamic economy and sheds new light on debates about the institutional framework for later European dominance. Commercial letters, business accounts and courtroom testimony bring to life how these medieval traders used personal gossip and legal mechanisms to manage far-flung agents, switched business strategies to manage political risks and asserted different parts of their fluid identities to gain advantage in the multicultural medieval trading world. This book paints a vivid picture of the everyday life of Jewish merchants in Islamic societies and adds new depth to debates about medieval trading institutions with unique quantitative analyses and innovative approaches.

Situated astride the trade routes of the western Mediterranean, the Catalan kingdom of Majorca has long deserved attention. It was established under the will of King James I of Aragon, who conquered Majorca in 1229, but was ruled from 1276 to 1343 by a cadet dynasty. In addition to the Balearic Islands the kingdom included the key business centres of Montpellier and Perpignan, and other lands in what is now southern France. It was also home to important Jewish and Muslim communities, and was the focus of immigration from Catalonia, Provence and Italy. This book emphasises the major transformations in the trade of the Balearic Islands from the eve of the Catalan conquest to the Black Death, and the effect of the kingdom's creation and demise on the economy of the region. Links between the island and mainland territories, and as far afield as England and the Canaries, are analysed in depth.

Lordships Of Southern Italy written by Sandro Carocci and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018 with History categories.

What was the real nature of medieval lordship in southern Italy? What can this region and its history bring to the great European debates on feudalism and aristocratic powers, their structures and evolution, and their social and economic impact? What contribution can the Kingdom of Sicily make to studies of the relationships between sovereigns, nobilities and peasant societies? And can the study of seigneurial powers and rural societies reshape the old arguments regarding the economic backwardness of the Mezzogiorno (the South of Italy) and the central role of its monarchy? This book offers the first systematic analysis of lordship in southern Italy in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, under the Norman, Staufen and early Angevin kings. It offers new interpretations of the powers of the nobility, and of rural societies and royal policy. It reveals the complexity of interactions between the king, nobles and peasants, and how they occurred and were expressed through laws and violence, feudal relations and economic investments, debates on freedom and serfdom, and the exploitation of people and natural resources. In these interactions a leading role is played by peasant societies - with previously unsuspected levels of dynamism - to set against that of the kings, who were determined to curb aristocratic powers, and of the nobles who were obliged to adapt their lordship in response to powerful rural societies and crown policies. What emerges is a hitherto unseen Mezzogiorno, vital and complex, whose study allows a deeper understanding not only of the affairs of the South but of many other regions of Europe.

A Times Literary Supplement Book of the Year A Marginal Revolution Best Non-Fiction Book of the Year A Seminary Co-op Notable Book of the Year A Times Higher Education Book of the Week A Choice Outstanding Academic Title of the Year Marco Santagata’s Dante: The Story of His Life illuminates one of the world’s supreme poets from many angles—writer, philosopher, father, courtier, political partisan. Santagata brings together a vast body of Italian scholarship on Dante’s medieval world, untangles a complex web of family and political relationships for English readers, and shows how the composition of the Commedia was influenced by local and regional politics. “Reading Marco Santagata’s fascinating new biography, the reader is soon forced to acknowledge that one of the cornerstones of Western literature [The Divine Comedy], a poem considered sublime and universal, is the product of vicious factionalism and packed with local scandal.” —Tim Parks, London Review of Books “This is a wonderful book. Even if you have not read Dante you will be gripped by its account of one of the most extraordinary figures in the history of literature, and one of the most dramatic periods of European history. If you are a Dantean, it will be your invaluable companion forever.” —A. N. Wilson, The Spectator

Whether destined for a sultan's palace or provincial household, a vast array of functional and often luxurious metal vessels and utensils have been produced throughout the Islamic world. Although not primarily religious objects, they were traditionally made with the same skill and imagination, and their designs and decoration reflect the strong cultural influence of Islam which extended from Spain and North Africa in the west to Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent in the east.
