This book covers the first 500 years of the common era. These years witnessed the revivals of Aristotelianism, Epicureanism, Pyrrhonism, Cynicism, and Pythagoreanism; but by far the most important movement was the revival of Platonism under Plotinus. Here, the historical context of Plotinus is provided including the currents of thought that preceded him and opened the path for him. The presuppositions of the Enneads are made explicit and the thought of Plotinus is reconstructed. The author reorients the expositions of Middle Platonism and neo-Pythagoreanism. He provides a full exposition of Hermeticism and the doctrines of the Chaldean Oracles. He also defends the notion that Philo of Alexandria nourished a Jewish philosophy, not an eclectic mixture.

From one of the 20th century’s most profound philosophers and writers, comes a thought provoking essay that seeks to reconcile Marxism with existentialism. Exploring the complicated relationship the two philosophical schools of thought have with one another, Sartre supposes that the two are in fact compatible and complimentary towards one another, with poignant analysis and reasoning. An important work of modern philosophy, Search for a Method has a major influence on the current perceptions of existentialism and Marxism. “This is the most important philosophical work by Sartre to be translated since Being and Nothingness.”—James Collings, America

Oxford Approaches to Classical Literature introduces individual works of Greek and Latin literature to readers who are approaching them for the first time. Each volume sets the work in its literary and historical context and aims to offer a balanced and engaging assessment of its content, artistry, and purpose. A brief survey of the influence of the work upon subsequent generations is included to demonstrate its enduring relevance and power. All quotations from the original are translated into English. Aristophanes was the comic mastermind of classical Athens, and Frogs is widely regarded as his most brilliant and multi-faceted play. Written and performed in 405 BCE and deeply embedded in that specific cultural moment, Frogs won first prize in that year's festival competition and has been-admired by readers and critics ever since, a testament to its timeless appeal. In addition to its hilarious language, stage antics, and plot, Frogs provides modern readers with an unparalleled range of insights into ancient Greek mentalities, exploring and critiquing the Athenians' ideas about drama and music, citizenship, slavery, and the possibilities of personal salvation and life after death. With this up-to-date and engaging account, Mark Griffith places Frogs in its original historical and cultural context, while underscoring the play's originality in its relation to parallel developments in tragedy and ancient Greek aesthetics in general. This volume provides not only a detailed analysis of the play itself and its reception but also to succinct introduction to Greek comedy overall, making it an invaluable companion to ancient theater for students and general readers alike. Letter to a Hostage is a book by the author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Saint-Exupéry initially wrote this piece as a preface for his best friend, Léon Werth’s novel: Trente-trois jours (Thirty Three Days). Werth had been forced to take refuge in the Jura region of France during the autumn of 1940 because of his Jewish origins. His book, however, could not be published, and so the author significantly revised his preface, removing any direct references to his friend and making him anonymous within the text and a symbol for France as the hostage of the occupying forces. This version was published independently in June 1943. The work is comprised of six short chapters which reflect upon recent aspects of the author’s life (travelling to Portugal, impressions of the Sahara, living in the USA...), and combines references to his friendship with Werth and to his love for his country.
