Book Description: The end of 2015 has brought the end of WHO's Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which have achieved a significant, though patchy improvement in global maternal and child health. The new-born health and stillbirths were not on the global agenda of MDGs. Hence, the global burden of neonatal and perinatal mortality remained largely unchanged. With the dawn of 2016, the world has entered into the new era of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs mandates all nations to reduce neonatal mortality rate to 12 per 1000 live births by 2030. Nations worldwide have committed to this in a major way. With this in mind, it is important to understand the current burden of global neonatal and perinatal mortality, as its risk factors and interventions required to reach the SDG target by 2030. This book on neonatal perinatal mortality provides a comprehensive and systematic review by panels of experts from well recognised institutions worldwide on the current status, determinants of neonatal perinatal deaths and the interventions needed to reduce these deaths worldwide. It is a must read for global health students and experts, paediatricians, neonatologists, perinatologists, obstetricians, public health professionals, health care strategists, health care funding agencies, government and non-government health care providers, academicians, researchers, nurses, midwives, community health care workers, medical students and medical academics. Innovations in technology and new therapies have changed the face of medicine in the last few decades. These include advances in fetal diagnosis (preimplantation genetics, chorionic villous sampling and amniocentesis), drugs that have been developed to treat unique conditions in neonates such as respiratory distress syndrome (surfactant) and pulmonary hypertension (inhaled nitric oxide), as well as technological advances and interventions resulting in diagnostic (ultrasounds and MRI) and therapeutic interventions (intrauterine transfusion to ECMO). Research in fertility treatments has resulted in test tube babies and cloned animals, and that has also fostered technological advances in diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. The primary purpose of Innovations in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine is to highlight these innovations in technology and therapy that have not only changed the way doctors deliver care to fetus and neonate but also reduced neonatal mortality thereby saving millions of lives in the process. These issues are addressed by the authors who are experts in their respective fields. The book will be valuable not only to healthcare providers but also to educators and policy makers.

Resident Duty Hours written by Institute of Medicine and has been published by National Academies Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-04-27 with Medical categories.

Medical residents in hospitals are often required to be on duty for long hours. In 2003 the organization overseeing graduate medical education adopted common program requirements to restrict resident workweeks, including limits to an average of 80 hours over 4 weeks and the longest consecutive period of work to 30 hours in order to protect patients and residents from unsafe conditions resulting from excessive fatigue. Resident Duty Hours provides a timely examination of how those requirements were implemented and their impact on safety, education, and the training institutions. An in-depth review of the evidence on sleep and human performance indicated a need to increase opportunities for sleep during residency training to prevent acute and chronic sleep deprivation and minimize the risk of fatigue-related errors. In addition to recommending opportunities for on-duty sleep during long duty periods and breaks for sleep of appropriate lengths between work periods, the committee also recommends enhancements of supervision, appropriate workload, and changes in the work environment to improve conditions for safety and learning. All residents, medical educators, those involved with academic training institutions, specialty societies, professional groups, and consumer/patient safety organizations will find this book useful to advocate for an improved culture of safety.
