Close to Home is the classic study of family, patriarchal ideologies, and the politics and strategy of women's liberation. On the table in this forceful and provocative debate are questions of whether men can be feminists, whether "bourgeois" and heterosexual women are retrogressive members of the women's movement, and how best to struggle against the multiple oppressions women endure. Rachel Hills's foreword to this new edition explores how Christine Delphy's analysis of marriage as the institution behind the exploitation of unpaid women's labor is as radical and relevant today as it ever was.

While it is uncontroversial to point to the liberal roots of feminism, a major issue in English-language feminist political thought over the last few decades has been whether feminism's association with liberalism should be relegated to the past. Can liberalism continue to serve feminist purposes? This book examines the positions of three contemporary feminists - Martha Nussbaum, Susan Moller Okin and Jean Hampton - who, notwithstanding decades of feminist critique, are unwilling to give up on liberalism. This book examines why, and in what ways, each of these theorists believes that liberalism offers the normative and political resources for the improvement of women's situations. It also brings out and tries to explain and evaluate the differences among them, notwithstanding their shared allegiance to liberalism. In so doing, the books goes to the heart of recent debates in feminist and political theory.

This qualitative study considers the subjective experience of being a feminist. In this study, a feminist is defined as a person who believes that the sexes are culturally, not biologically, created and who either actively or passively participates in a social justice movement for gender equality and human liberation. This study includes a review of the literature of feminist identity, including historical works, theoretical models and clinical applications. The data were subsequently analyzed using a narrative approach and the stories of the participants were integrated into the text and organized into separate themes. The results of this study indicate that feminists have the following characteristics: They possess an early awareness of the suffering of others, have supportive and encouraging people in their lives, are endowed with a renegade spirit, maintain non-traditional roles, and the emphasize the importance of advocacy in their lives. The results of this study can enable psychologists, other mental health providers, educators and parents to understand the importance of unconditional positive regard in identity development, as well as encourage programs and social support for young girls. This research could be used as a platform for future studies that focus on more specific types of feminists, such as those of different ethnicities or gender, and further delineated with personality tests such as the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI). In addition, studying the connection between social justice, empathy and being a feminist may further understand how feminist identity forms and how one lives his or her life as a feminist.

'Timely, necessary and important' J.K. Rowling '[This book is] guaranteed to remind us what we have still to fight for. I can't think of a single person who wouldn't benefit from reading it' Observer 'Bindel is a rock star of second-wave feminism . . . an important, courageous book' The Times 'Bindel delivers a robust call to arms in every chapter . . . this book could not be timelier . . . As a young feminist who has finally seen the light, I consider it essential reading' The Critic Feminism is a quest for the liberation of women from patriarchy. Feminism strives for a world in which women are not oppressed. Feminism prioritises exposing and ending male violence towards women and girls. This is Julie Bindel's feminism, a definition born of 40 years at the front line of the feminist movement. Why then, she asks, is feminism the only social justice movement in the world that is expected to prioritise every other issue before pursuing its own objective of women's liberation? Why does the movement appear to be moving backwards, accommodating the rights and feelings of men and leaving women in the cold? Women make up half the global population yet why is feminism still treated as a minority movement? In this searing and ground-breaking book, Bindel deconstructs the many pervasive myths about feminism - Do women really want what men have? Can men be feminists? Are women liberated by sexual violation? - assessing whether feminism has achieved its goals and debunking theories that second wave feminism is irrelevant and one-dimensional. Bindel shines a light on the most important issues, including pornography, sexual violence and prostitution. Drawing on Bindel's own experiences, as well as countless interviews with women and girls of all ages and backgrounds (as well as contributions from commentators such as Gloria Steinem and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie), Feminism for Women presents a clear-sighted view of why feminism is a proud social movement that every woman on the planet benefits from. The invisible forces of misogyny affect us all. This book is a call to arms to reclaim feminism for all women. Only together can we resist and overcome.

Feminist research is having an increasing impact on the study of families and close relationships. In this book, each contributor traces her or his experience of incorporating gender into a research programme informed by feminist ideas, methods and ethics. This personal statement is then used to reflexively examine the author's own work, as well as the work of others, on many of the central topics in the study of families and close relationships - love, caregiving, sexuality, friendship, ageing, work and violence.
