L'inclusion des femmes dans la République s'inscrit dans un long processus, encore inachevé. Après les promesses de 1945, l'avènement de la Ve République en 1958 a signé leur mise hors jeu politique : divers traits institutionnels de ce régime hybride ont assuré aux hommes un quasimonopole de la politique. Écartées du Parlement et des assemblées élues, les femmes n'ont longtemps dû leur existence en politique qu'à la volonté présidentielle. Paradoxalement, il leur a été plus facile de gouverner que de représenter. La rupture introduite par les lois dites de " parité ", votées entre 1999 et 2007, n'a pas mis fin à l'hégémonie masculine au Parlement où les hommes siègent à plus de 80 % à l'Assemblée nationale et à plus de 75 % au Sénat. Mais, ministres ou secrétaires d'État, les femmes se sont en revanche taillé une place grandissante au gouvernement, prenant également le départ dans la course présidentielle. Alors que les Françaises et les Français se disent prêts à élire une femme à la tête de l'État, Mariette Sineau montre que le genre est plus que jamais une catégorie d'analyse utile et nous invite à re-penser les rapports de pouvoir entre femmes et hommes dans la France du XXIe siècle
