The Ferrari 250GT Berlinettas are undeniably beautiful and, arguably, the greatest Ferrari racing cars ever built. The 250 GT Competizione Berlinetta - now popularly known as the “Tour de France Berlinetta,” in honour of the model’s domination of the great French event with four outright victories - was the true forerunner of the series of cars which established Ferrari as a major force in sports car racing. Here is the story of the development, building and racing of the “Tour de France” Ferraris. Importantly, the book also contains individual histories of the Ferrari “TdF” Berlinettas.

The 250-series was an early Ferrari success story and in 1959 spawned one of the most recognisable sports cars ever built. It is now also one of the most coveted. The 250 GT Berlinetta (aka SWB, ‘Short Wheelbase’) had a dual role as supreme grand tourer and outstanding racing car. Chassis 2689GT, the subject of Ferrari 250 GT SWB, was purchased by amateur racer Pierre Dumay on behalf of his friend Pierre Noblet – who had written off his previous 250 GT SWB in an accident at Clermont-Ferrand. Shortly after taking delivery, Noblet and co-driver Jean Guichet took the new car to a class-winning third place overall in the Le Mans 24 Hours – the dawn of a relatively brief, but very bright, competition history.

The 250GT was Ferrari's first designed-from-scratch road car introduced in 1956. Nevertheless the cars still had the famous racing background to draw on. The V12 Testa Rossa was then introduced as well as the 4.9 Super Fast and the 206 Dino. This was also the period of the famous 250GT, still the most famous sports racer of the time. This is a book of contemporary road and comparison tests, specification and technical data, model introductions, driver's impressions and background. Models covered include: 250 GT Europa, 250 Testa Rossa, 4.9 Super Fast, 250 CoupT, 206 Dino, 250 California, 250 GT Berlinetta, 250GT, 246 Sport, 250 GT CoupT, 2+2, Mille. 92 pages, 250 illus. SB.
