Enzo Ferrari si è dato da fare, sempre, per non corrispondere allo stereotipo suggerito dai suoi soprannomi: dal “Drake” al Mago di Maranello per finire – dopo un duro e amaro conflitto con Santa Madre Chiesa – a una sorta di (s)qualifica... divina, Saturno, ma solo perché, secondo un illustre gesuita, “mangiava i suoi figli”, ovvero mandava a morire i suoi piloti, tanti, senza piangerli. Non meritava tanto, naturalmente, anche se certi suoi atteggiamenti suggerivano in lui durezza d’animo e cinismo; ma l’Ingegnere (ecco come gli piaceva esser chiamato, lui gran lavoratore e sportivo di origini semplici e autodidatta, dopo che la prestigiosa Università di Bologna, la più antica del mondo, l’Alma Mater, gli aveva consegnato la laurea ad honorem) aveva sofferto e continuava a soffrire per quella pesante accusa come uno scomunicato, sicché alternava alle sfuriate un forte senso dell’umorismo che piaceva soprattutto ai giornalisti, ai suoi amici/nemici. Italo Cucci, aderendo a sua volta a una sorta di condanna professionale (“Parlo volentieri con lei di tutto, perché non capisce niente di auto”) poté vivere decine di incontri con un Ferrari diverso, intimo e segreto, sempre sorridente e sereno. Un Ferrari inedito che vale la pena incontrare, in queste pagine scritte col cuore e in una ricca galleria fotografica, anch’essa senza precedenti, realizzata da un altro Mago di quei tempi, Walter Breveglieri.

«Le zanzare erano fastidiose quella sera d'agosto. Avevo tra le mani un giornale illustrato d'automobilismo stampato a Torino. Me ne servivo per scacciarle. Improvvisamente Peppino, il grande amico della mia adolescenza, mi chiese: "Tu che cosa farai da grande?". Sotto la luce incerta di un lampione a gas della barriera daziaria di Modena gli additai una fotografia in prima pagina. "Raffaele De Palma" diceva la didascalia "ancora una volta protagonista a Indianapolis, la grande competizione americana." "Farò il corridore" risposi.» Inizia così, dall'ambizioso sogno di un ragazzo, l'irripetibile avventura di Enzo Ferrari, come lui stesso racconta in questa sua autobiografia, uscita nei primi anni Sessanta, quando «il Drake» era già l'italiano più famoso al mondo, aggiornata nei due decenni successivi per edizioni private e rimasta quindi fino a oggi sconosciuta al grande pubblico. Con lo stile asciutto, stringato, quasi aforistico (celeberrimo il suo «Il secondo è il primo degli ultimi»), ben noto a chi lo conobbe, il pioniere dell'automobilismo sportivo italiano snocciola pareri, dati e - soprattutto - ricordi. L'infanzia vissuta in un'Emilia di sapore già guareschiano, l'officina di carpentiere del padre, le corse a cui Enzo assiste da bambino tra Modena e Bologna, gli anni difficili della guerra, l'esordio da pilota nel 1919, le gare con l'Isotta Fraschini e l'Alfa Romeo. E nel 1929, mentre il mondo è sconvolto dalla Grande Depressione, da vero visionario fonda a Modena la Scuderia Ferrari, per far correre i rampolli dell'alta borghesia. Nemmeno il secondo conflitto mondiale e il bombardamento delle officine di Maranello lo distolgono dai suoi progetti: nel 1947 il cavallino rampante debutta in pista, inaugurando una stagione di successi destinata a diventare leggenda. Sono, quelle del Drake, pagine ricche di aneddoti curiosi (come quando, dovendo fare a bordo di una Rossa da battistrada a Mussolini, lo seminò sui tornanti dell'Appennino) e di lapidari giudizi tecnici e umani - non sempre lusinghieri - sui piloti che gareggiarono per lui (dall'«imprevedibile» Nuvolari all'«indecifrabile» Fangio, dal «garibaldino» Ascari allo «sconcertante» Mike Hawthorn, fino al «puntiglioso» Niki Lauda), ma anche intrise di dolore. Perché qui, in deroga alla proverbiale riservatezza, Ferrari parla liberamente di vicende intime, come la morte del giovanissimo figlio Dino, un evento che renderà per sempre «terribile» ogni sua gioia.
