"The gentleman's library was contained in beautifully wood-crafted, floor to ceiling bookshelves. The layout of the collection featured the rare and limited edition books. These works were typically large format, folio or boxed editions. Typically folios of linen-faced or marbled board, were made by adding a top, side and bottom folding flaps to a books back cover, which when closed and the folio's front cover is secured, resembled a box. Securing was always by ribbon ties at mid points on the folio's side. The inside of folios typically contained large engraved plates, printed on one side, loosely assembled or bound, with accompanying double-sided text printed as either a separate booklet or bound with the engravings at the folio's front. In two or more volume sets, the first volume was normally text and the second or more volume(s) were the engraved or photographic, one-sided plates. Folios varied in size from 1 Ix15 inches to 20x30 inches. University and public libraries call such folios oversized editions and relegated them to the lowest shelf or provided them with separate identification and shelved them off-to-the-side. In the technical library, the large format volumes were shelved prominently, in the center of the cabinets, from waist-level to shoulder-height, and arranged so that their beautiful half-calf bindings, faced out. The book case may also have had a wider base cabinet forming a ledge layout shelf at table height. On such, a bookstand would sit allowing a featured volume to be shown open displaying one of the book's primary engravings. Of equal importance were published sets, or multiple volumes works. These were always handsomely bound with leather or half-leather covers and embossed titles on their edges."--Page 4 of cover.
