The Fertilization Response of the Egg is the third and final volume of the Biology of Fertilization which provides a detailed discussion of the responses of the egg to the fertilizing sperm, collectively called as the activation of the egg. It is an anthology of physiological articles written by biology and physiology professionals. The book is divided into 12 chapters, half of which focused on the sea urchin egg fertilization, as it is the most studied form. The first two chapters cover the discussions on the first visible egg responses to fertilization and the formation of the fertilization membrane. The following chapter describes the relationship of sperm entry into the amphibian egg and the establishment of the symmetry of the embryo. Other chapters focus on the electrical and ionic changes of the egg plasma membrane and cytoplasm. The remaining parts of the book describe the synthetic activities in the egg that are initiated during fertilization. These include description of DNA and maternal RNA syntheses, nuclear-cytoplasm interactions, protein synthesis during oogenesis and early embryogenesis, and the expression of maternal messenger RNA. The book is an excellent reference for undergraduate and graduate biology students, specifically in physiology, embryogenesis, and developmental biology. It can also be an invaluable source of information for lecturers and professionals in biology.

This extensively updated and revised edition of In Vitro Fertilization: The A.R.T. of Making Babies addresses the key issues and concerns of infertile couples. Written by one of the top in vitro specialists in the country, this book discusses in plain language everything couples need to know about IVF. From how to locate and choose the best IVF programs to what to expect as you go through the process, this book will prepare couples for the complex and emotional IVF journey. Included here are: • Conditions that negatively affect fertility, such as sexually transmitted diseases, endometriosis, ectopic pregnancy, and immune system conditions • Surrogate motherhood, egg donation, and other third-party parenting options • Detailed discussion of ovulation and the influence of age on egg quality • Ethics in fertility technology, including the recent controversies over cloning This book provides extensive technical guidance to couples who are considering in vitro fertilization, allowing for a more well-informed life changing decision.

Fertilization in mammals normally occUrs within the oviduct, where it is relatively inaccessible to study. However, as a result of painstaking research, most of it carried out over the last five years, this barrier to experimentation has been largely overcome by the development of in vitro fertilization techniques for at least 11 different species, including man. The result has been a rapid increase in our knowledge of the physiological and bio chemical mechanisms involved in the fertilization process. The aim of this book, which is an extension of my recent review of cell surface interactions in fertilization (Gwatkin, 1976), is to present a brief, but well documented, account of the new knowledge that has been attained. Although this book deals with mammalian fertilization mechanisms, I have included some recent experiments on am phibian and invertebrate gametes to supplement the mammalian picture. This information is particularly valuable as the rela tively large number of eggs available from these lower forms has advanced our knowledge of certain fertilization mechanisms beyond what is known in mammals. However, in the interest of brevity, I have omitted details of morphology and minor varia tions between species. For these, and other aspects not covered here, the reader is referred to the books of Austin (1965, 1968), vii viii PREFACE Austin and Short (1972), Metz and Monroy (1969), Monroy (1965), Lord Rothschild (1956a), and Zamboni (l971a).

The Organon Symposia have actually become a tradition, keeping up with exciting developments in reproductive medicine. The purpose of this symposium on "Fertiliza tion of the Human Egg in Vitro" was to bring together the stilllimited number of elinical specialists in the field and to stimulate another group of basic research people to exchange their experiences and knowledge, hopefully promoting elose cooperation between the two groups. It was a kind of scientific "first" that all research teams so far successful in achieving the birth of a healthy baby, fertilized in vitro came together at a workshop conference without a large audience of spectators and reporters, but with a small number of highly critical colleagues from the fields of basic reproductive physiology and comparative developmental biology. This atmosphere allowed for the elose exchange of results, hypotheses, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, criticism, and respect, and created very productive discussions, all of which furthered the aim of the method: To help more childless couples to have their own babies by the ultima ratio procedure of in vitro fertilization and embryo replacement. The book that has emerged from this symposium will help to disseminate the great amount of information and experience gathered among the scientifically and clinically interested colleagues of many other hospitals and universities who could not be invited to the meeting. At the same time, it will prove that there is much more work to be done in the basic and clinical sciences of human embryology and reproductive biology.

This comprehensively updated and expanded second edition builds on its successful and popular predecessor, retaining the practical features which made the first edition such an essential guide to IVF. The edition describes additions to the range of ART clinical treatments, including the use of testicular and epididymal sperm, blastocyst stage transfer, and new perspectives in cryobiology and cryopreservation techniques. By incorporating laboratory techniques and protocols, with an even greater emphasis on quality control, it provides an indispensable and practical account. The introductory chapters covering the scientific background that underpins effective laboratory practice have been substantially expanded, derived from research in mammalian systems into the molecular biology of oogenesis, oocyte maturation, and early embryo metabolism. This second edition distils a wealth of practical and scientific detail for the benefit of all IVF practitioners.

The majority of scientists interested in fertilization and early developmental processes will undoubtably have encountered the works of Alberto Monroy at some time in their careers. Alberto's contribution to this field spans oogenesis to embryogenesis, where he used physiological, biochemical and morphological tools to answer a number of basic problems in cell biology. This multi-disciplinary approach, together with his remarkable intellectual flexibility and humour has had an enormous impact on this field and all those fortunate enough to have worked with him. The chapters in this book have been divided into four sections. The initial presentations revolve around late events of gameteogenesis, that lead to a physiologically mature gamete. Probably the most exciting area for research at the moment is the identification of the cytoplasmic mechanisms responsible for the meiotic arrest of oocytes and the factors responsible for initiating their maturation (Chapters 3 and 4). Less is known about the physiological changes in the male gamete in preparation for fertilization and this may be identified as a major area for future research. Although comparable data for the plant kingdom is presently restricted to studies on marine algae, new techniques for isolating angiosperm gametes (Chapters 1 and 17) promise rapid advances in this field. The second section looks at the events and molecules involved in gamete recognition, binding and fusion. One of the most controversial topics is when does sperm-egg fusion actually occur (Chapter 14).
