Festivals have always been part of city life, but their relationship with their host cities has continually changed. With the rise of industrialization, they were largely considered peripheral to the course of urban affairs. Now they have become central to new ways of thinking about the challenges of economic and social change, as well as repositioning cities within competitive global networks. In this timely and thought-provoking book, John and Margaret Gold provide a reflective and evidence-based historical survey of the processes and actors involved, charting the ways that regular festivals have now become embedded in urban life and city planning. Beginning with David Garrick’s rain-drenched Shakespearean Jubilee and ending with Sydney’s flamboyant Mardi Gras celebrations, it encompasses the emergence and consolidation of city festivals. After a contextual historical survey that stretches from Antiquity to the late nineteenth century, there are detailed case studies of pioneering European arts festivals in their urban context: Venice’s Biennale, the Salzburg Festival, the Cannes Film Festival and Edinburgh’s International Festival. Ensuing chapters deal with the worldwide proliferation of arts festivals after 1950 and with the ever-increasing diversifycation of carnival celebrations, particularly through the actions of groups seeking to assert their identity. The conclusion draws together the book’s key themes and sketches the future prospects for festival cities. Lavishly illustrated, and copiously researched, this book is essential reading not just for urban geographers, social historians and planners, but also for anyone interested in contemporary festival and events tourism, urban events strategy, urban regeneration regeneration, or simply building a fuller understanding of the relationship between culture, planning and the city.

However, the essays in this volume also suggest that there is something ironic and unsettling about the immense popularity of a holiday whose main images are of death, evil, and the grotesque. Halloween and Other Festivals of Death and Life is a unique contribution that questions our concepts of religiosity and spirituality while contributing to our understanding of Halloween as a rich and diverse reflection of our society's past, present, and future identity.

Whether they're decorating Easter trees or celebrating Wagner's birthday by playing recordings of his Ring cycle operas and incinerating a model of Valhalla on an outdoor barbecue to the closing strains of "Gotterdämerung," Americans know both how to create and how to celebrate holidays. Jack Santino's guide to such frivolity is a wonderfully readable exploration of holidays, periods of festivity, and life-cycle rituals and celebrations. Santino draws on history, anthropology, popular culture, and folklore to show the intricate relationships between holidays and the roles that celebrations and rituals play in people's lives.

This book is about the fulfillment of the Lord Jesus's finished work. It deals with the end times perfection of the Bride of Christ, the manifestation of the sons of God, and the Elect/ chosen of God, through the Tribulation. The Holy Days God gave to Israel have been largely neglected by the Church, this book introduces them year by year through the seven years of the tribulation. There are seven feast, seven high sabbaths, all pointing to the Lord Jesus. The number seven is repeated and repeated throughout the book of Revelations. Seven is the number of perfection, not judgement, in the Hebrew language. I believe that the book of Revelations is about the perfection of the church, not the judgment of the world. While each festival will deal, with what will be happening in the world, the focus of the book, will be about the development of the character of the family of God. Not all believers will be the bride, or the manifest sons, or the elect, most will be the called. The scripture declares many are called, few are chosen. I have written three books all dealing with end time prophesy. This book, the last of three. The others are, THE CARNAL MIND OF MAN THE LAST ENEMY and GOSHEN THROUGH THE TRIBULATION. All are dealing with the manifestation of the finished work of the LORD JESUS. One major distinction I explore, is the character of the bride. The bride will have the character of the groom. Jesus was full of Grace and Truth and possessed Unconditional Love (agape). The word tells us that God the Fathers main character trait is, that He is Agape. The fruits of the Spirit are also character traits of the Father. If we pursue the purpose of the tribulation period, I believe we will be able to possess what Jesus purchased for us. The view of the people of the world including most of the church is that the tribulation is the end. My view is that it just the beginning.

Festivals and Holy Days are very familiar, very important interwoven part of our religious and social life. Leaving aside the holy days, undoubtedly, festivals are objects of natural love to the entire human race. Poet Laureate Kalidasa, has observed this truth and says ‘Human beings are fond of festivities’ (“utsava priya khalu manuShyaaH” shaakuntala Act 6). They are especially happy occasions of life. The most common method in which people all over the world celebrate festivals is by getting together with family and friends, enjoying the savory gourmet foods, drinking to the best of their ability (at times, even spending beyond their means), singing, dancing and chit chatting to their hearts content, forgetting their troubles, if any. In this book we will elaborate in a chronological order beginning with the first month of the year, incorporating any special features in the description of festivals (parvas).
