Ulrike Meinhof, Horst Mahler und Gudrun Ensslin waren nicht nur Begründer der Rote Armee Fraktion, sondern gehörten auch zum exklusiven Stipendiatenkreis der Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes. Bislang befanden sich die Förderakten – mit ausführlichen Lebensläufen, genauen Semesterberichten und aussagekräftigen Gutachten – unter Verschluss. Weder Journalisten noch Wissenschaftler konnten diesen einmaligen Quellenfundus nutzen. Nicht einmal dem Generalbundesanwalt wurde Einsicht gewährt, als er zur Vorbereitung der Terroristenprozesse in den 1970er Jahren beim größten und renommiertesten deutschen Begabtenförderungswerk entsprechend nachsuchte.Die Terroristen in nuce hätte er in den Dokumenten kaum gefunden. Die hier erstmals veröffentlichten Studienstiftungsakten sind gerade insofern ein beunruhigendes Zeugnis, als sie belegen, wie schwer nur im Terrorismus endende Biografien sich prognostizieren lassen. Die Unterlagen bieten mehr Anhaltspunkte für alternative Lebensverläufe und bestätigen doch, wie wenig nur ein hohes Maß an Intelligenz vor Radikalisierung und politisch motivierter Gewaltanwendung schützt. Von den jeweiligen "Gesamtpersönlichkeiten" ihrer Stipendiaten versprach sich die Studienstiftung – wie es im zeitgenössischen Jargon hieß – »hervorragende Leistungen im Dienste des Volksganzen«. Die hohen Erwartungen wurden in den Fällen Meinhof, Mahler und Ensslin schwer enttäuscht.

Das strafrechtliche Kompensationsverbot in § 370 Abs. 4 S. 3 AO ist eines der umstrittensten Elemente des Steuerstrafrechts und von großer Relevanz insbesondere in der Umsatzsteuerhinterziehung. Das Werk erläutert ausführlich Historie, Grund und Grenzen des Kompensationsverbots sowie dessen dogmatischen Grundlagen insbesondere im Hinblick auf das Umsatzsteuerstrafrecht. Beleuchtet wird dabei auch die Anwendung des Kompensationsverbots im Rahmen der steuerstrafrechtlichen Selbstanzeige. Schwerpunkt der Arbeit bildet sodann die systematische Analyse der Rechtsprechung zum Kompensationsverbot, die anhand einer ausführlichen Betrachtung des Unionsrechts und der zum Umsatzsteuerrechts ergangenen EuGH-Rechtsprechung weiterentwickelt wird: Anhand der Bildung von Fallgruppen zeigt der Autor, wie eine rechtssichere und grundrechtskonforme Auslegung des § 370 Abs. 4 S. 3 AO aussehen könnte. Die Arbeit wurde 2018 mit dem Fakultätspreis der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München ausgezeichnet.

Surveys the conditions of refugees from Nazi Germany and Austria, mainly Jews, in exile in Italy. Ch. 3 (pp. 141-252) focuses on the number of German Jewish emigrants and their social and economic situation. Ch. 5 (pp. 266-274) shows how Jews from Austria tried to enter Italy after the Anschluss but were turned back at the border. Nevertheless, many entered Italy on the pretext that they were in transit to other countries. Ch. 6 (pp. 275-348) describes rising antisemitism in Italy after 1933, and official anti-Jewish policy, including racist discrimination and a press propaganda campaign after 1938. A decree of expulsion of the 9,000 "foreign" Jews living in Italy was enacted in September 1938 and some were deported to Germany. However, most remained in Italy illegally. also mentions illegal Jewish emigration to Palestine from Italian harbors in 1938-39.

Willy Brandt, the first Social Democratic Chancellor of West Germany (1969-1974) was perhaps the most charismatic German leader since Hitler. His life reflects German 20th-century history from the Weimar Republic to the new Germany as a result of unification with the GDR. He was mayor of Berlin when the Wall was built (1961) and as Chancellor he initiated Ostpolitik which indirectly contributed to the fall of the Iron Curtain. As Chairman of the North-South Commission he drew the world's attention to the plight of the Third World. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991.
