Neptum' estun fossile constitué par un disque un peu infundibulifnrme, à contours assez peu réguliers, dont l'épaisseur est ordinairement d'une quinzaine de millimètres, et dont le diamètre atteint souvent 12 centimètres. Sur une coupe du disque la structure apparaît presque toujours assez nettement. Il est constitué par des plaques rhomboïdales minces, juxtaposées par leurs bords et disposées en deux couches, dont l'une forme la face concave du disque et l'autre sa face opposée. L'espace compris entre ces deux couches est traversé peu: des colonnettes perpendiculaires à celles-ci et reliant entre elles les plaques deux à deux. Les plaques losangiques de_ la surface externe convexe sont orientées de telle manière qu'elles constituent des séries excentriques qui partent du centre où elles sont très petites, pour aboutir à la périphérie, où leurs dimensions sont bien plus considérables. Le centre de ces plaques est bosselé; il en résulte que la surface des Réceptaculites est marquée de séries excentriques de mamelons. A une étude approfondie, ces plaques se montrent formées de trois couches, l'une externe, charbonneuse (que je suppose ètre due à la carbonisation lente d'une enveloppe cellulosique existant chez l'individu vivant), au-dessous de laquelle se trouvent deux couches constituées par du calcaire spathique. La face concave du corps de ces ètres, ainsi queje l'ai dit, est également limitée par des plaques rhomboïdales. This personal observation of Tanna, an island in the southern part of the Vanuatu archipelago, presents an extraordinary case study of cultural resistance. Based on interviews, myths and stories collected in the field, and archival research, The Tree and the Canoe analyzes the resilience of the people of Tanna, who, when faced with an intense form of cultural contact that threatened to engulf them, liberated themselves by re-creating, and sometimes reinventing, their own kastom. Following a lengthy history of Tanna from European contact, the author discusses in detail original creation myths and how Tanna people revived them in response to changes brought by missionaries and foreign governments. The final chapters of the book deal with the violent opposition of part of the island population to the newly established National Unity government.
