Gang culture is one of the most volatile issues to have impacted young people throughout history and around the world. By focusing on the fictional representation of youth gangs, this work presents a unique perspective on an all-too-real phenomenon and its many manifestations. Organized chronologically and topically, the volume begins with a powerful essay tracing the origins and developments of youth gangs, from the early days of the Wild West to immigration gangs in 19th- and 20th-century America and the Twenty chapters, each introduced with a primary document, fully explore the different types of gangs, identifying their time, place, struggles, and demographic character. Included are the early gangs of New York City, prison gangs, Asian gangs, school gangs, African American gangs, and girl gangs. Each chapter analyzes one or more works of fiction in terms of its thematic message and the light it sheds on the nature of the depicted gang situation. The examined fiction will be of special interest to students and educators, and includes works often found on assigned reading lists, such as The Chocolate War, The Outsiders, and Lord of the Flies. Popular works, such as Gangs of New York, provide an historical perspective on early immigrant gangs, while presenting timeless themes of identity struggles that resonate for young people everywhere. In addition to the literary works and primary documents, suggestions for additional titles and sources for further information on the topics are offered.

Placed in a fictional but typical European city, a research team responds to reports of street gang violence by adapting the widely used research procedures developed in the Eurogang Program in a dozen countries since 1997. The author follows the development of the research team and its relationships with community leaders, the press, and several different street gangs in the city. Entree to the gangs brings research and personal problems for the staff and reveals important differences between the gangs in crime patterns and group structures. Comparison to American and other European gangs builds the case for several forms of gang knowledge, while specific incidents including violent attacks on staff members bring to life the unique aspects of Euroburg, a city of tourism and commercial success. The author humanizes the study of street gangs, based on his forty-year career in gang research and control."

This collection of writings on and by members of urban youth gangs gives voice to an American subculture far richer and more complex than the headlines indicate. Urban youth gangs are typically viewed as no more than training grounds for thugs and felons. This breakthrough anthology presents a far different picture, revealing present and former gang members' and street activists' artistic impulses, emotional sensitivities, political beliefs, and capacities to assess the social conditions that created them. The Bandana Republic contains powerful writing: fiction and essays, poetry, and polemics written by adolescents from gangs like the Crips and Bloods and the Mexican Mafia. There's also creative work by ex-gangbangers who have become activists, artists, musicians, and movie stars. J. Sheeler's "Seven Immortals" finds grim poetry in a young girl's gang initiation. Jaha Zainabu's "The Jungle (Blood Territory)" is a lacerating portrait of an LA Blood. Commander's "The Brothas Gunnin'" piercingly profiles a neighborhood--and a world--under siege.

Miller homes is a community housing development known for warehousing low-income people. There, trouble always seems to be brewing. Gangs fight over this territory while residents are calling on city officials to take action to bring peace to the community. Among the residents of Miller Homes is Bertha, a woman in her early thirties who has been forced to live in the development due to her inability to find a job that pays well enough to allow her to move up in the world. She is also an activist for the community, crusading to make Miller Homes a better and safer place to live. Meanwhile, fourteen-year-old Breeze knows that selling drugs is the only way for him to make real money. He’s been hanging around Miller’s parking lots for years and is a product of that environment. And then there’s Flash, an outspoken gang leader who has no fear of anyone and is used to getting his way. Fate sets the three of them on a collision course as they face the trials and realities of living in the projects. This novel is typical of some project communities in today’s societies where people living in dangerous housing developments do what they must to survive.
