A Comprehensive Guide to Identifying More than 35 Species of Urban Hipsters Like most wildlife, Urban Hipsters offer valuable and entertaining opportunities for observation and study. To date, casual students of wild Hipsters have been left without a tattooed ankle to stand on, as even the simple tasks of identifying and classifying each species have never been completed. The Hip, though simpleminded, are wily. Now, however, this cutting-edge manual by world-renowned hipthologist and dinner-party favorite Josh Aiello allows even the most amateur of observers to differentiate a Mod (Angophilia dandyum) from a Punk (Rebellium ostentatia), to identify the velvet rope-circumvention abilities unique to EuroTrash, and to recognize the symptoms of Ex-Frat-carried Loafer-and-Wallet Disease with confidence and ease. "A Field Guide to the Urban Hipster covers mating habits, the origins of species, and natural habitats for all species one may encounter, regardless of terrain. The result of over ten dateless years spent in the field, "A Field Guide to the Urban Hipster is sure to educate and delight for generations to come. Lavishly illustrated by former pet caricaturist Matthew Shultz, this comprehensive guide is the ultimate handbook for the urban observer.

A humor book based on the “depressingly astute” blog satirizing the fashionably unconventional yet always on trend. (The New Yorker) From the dive bars of Brooklyn's Williamsburg to the dirty alleys of San Francisco's Mission, the urban hipster has redefined American cool with a sighing disdain for everything mainstream. Hipsters are easily identified by their worn-out shoes, fixies and PBR tallboys, but until now no one had investigated beyond the hipster look to the even more hilarious hipster psyche. With personally researched articles, revealing illustrations and helpful charts and graphs, Stuff Hipsters Hate exposes the bottomless well of impassioned scorn that motivates the ever-apathetic hipster, including: lMATING AND SOCIAL HATES ♠ buying you a drink ♠ monogamy ♠ texting back in a timely fashion APPAREL AND GROOMING HATES ♠ high heels ♠ muscles ♠ being asked about their tattoos WORK AND LIFE HATES ♠ full-time jobs ♠ knowing their bank balance ♠ enthusiasm “Wickedly Funny” –The Frisky

A field guide to scenesters, trend-hoppers, and other cutting-edge species you’ve like, probably never heard of. They’re pretty obscure. An illustrated pocket guide to the hip characters populating “cool neighborhoods” across America, Hipster Animals helps readers identify these urban wildlife in their natural habitats. Including details on the creatures’ identifying characteristics, diets, mating behavior, and calls, this parody reference guide provides a snarky glimpse into the foreign—yet all too familiar—world of the trendsetters among us.

Against Everything written by Mark Greif and has been published by Vintage this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-09-06 with Literary Collections categories.

A brilliant collection of essays by a young writer who is already a star in the intellectual firmament. As William Deresiewicz has written in Harper’s Magazine, “[Mark Greif ] is an intellectual, full stop . . . There is much of [Lionel] Trilling in Greif . . . Much also of Susan Sontag . . . What he shares with both, and with the line they represent, is precisely a sense of intellect—of thought, of mind—as a conscious actor in the world.” Over the past eleven years, Greif has been publishing superb, and in some cases already famous, essays in n+1, the high-profile little magazine that he co-founded. These essays address such key topics in the cultural, political, and intellectual life of our time as the tyranny of exercise, the tyranny of nutrition and food snobbery, the sexualization of childhood (and everything else), the philosophical meaning of Radiohead, the rise and fall of the hipster, the impact of the Occupy Wall Street movement, and the crisis of policing. Four of the selections address, directly and unironically, the meaning of life—what might be the right philosophical stance to adopt toward one’s self and the world. Each essay in Against Everything is learned, original, highly entertaining, and, from start to finish, dead serious. They are the work of a young intellectual who, with his peers, is reinventing and reinvigorating what intellectuals can be and say and do. Mark Greif manages to reincarnate and revivify the thought and spirit of the greatest of American dissenters, Henry David Thoreau, for our time and historical situation.

Buzz written by Lisa Jean Moore and has been published by NYU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-27 with Social Science categories.

Winner, 2014 Distinguished Scholarship Award presented by the Animals & Society section of the American Sociological Association Bees are essential for human survival—one-third of all food on American dining tables depends on the labor of bees. Beyond pollination, the very idea of the bee is ubiquitous in our culture: we can feel buzzed; we can create buzz; we have worker bees, drones, and Queen bees; we establish collectives and even have communities that share a hive-mind. In Buzz, authors Lisa Jean Moore and Mary Kosut convincingly argue that the power of bees goes beyond the food cycle, bees are our mascots, our models, and, unlike any other insect, are both feared and revered. In this fascinating account, Moore and Kosut travel into the land of urban beekeeping in New York City, where raising bees has become all the rage. We follow them as they climb up on rooftops, attend beekeeping workshops and honey festivals, and even put on full-body beekeeping suits and open up the hives. In the process, we meet a passionate, dedicated, and eclectic group of urban beekeepers who tend to their brood with an emotional and ecological connection that many find restorative and empowering. Kosut and Moore also interview professional beekeepers and many others who tend to their bees for their all-important production of a food staple: honey. The artisanal food shops that are so popular in Brooklyn are a perfect place to sell not just honey, but all manner of goods: soaps, candles, beeswax, beauty products, and even bee pollen. Buzz also examines media representations of bees, such as children’s books, films, and consumer culture, bringing to light the reciprocal way in which the bee and our idea of the bee inform one another. Partly an ethnographic investigation and partly a meditation on the very nature of human/insect relations, Moore and Kosut argue that how we define, visualize, and interact with bees clearly reflects our changing social and ecological landscape, pointing to how we conceive of and create culture, and how, in essence, we create ourselves.

Art After The Hipster written by Wes Hill and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-20 with Social Science categories.

This book examines the complexities of the hipster through the lens of art history and cultural theory, from Charles Baudelaire’s flâneur to the contemporary “creative” borne from creative industries policies. It claims that the recent ubiquity of hipster culture has led many artists to confront their own significance, responding to the mass artification of contemporary life by de-emphasising the formal and textual deconstructions so central to the legacies of modern and postmodern art. In the era of creative digital technologies, long held characteristics of art such as individual expression, innovation, and alternative lifestyle are now features of a flooded and fast-paced global marketplace. Against the idea that artists, like hipsters, are the “foot soldiers of capitalism”, the institutionalized networks that make up the contemporary art world are working to portray a view of art that is less a discerning exercise in innovative form-making than a social platform—a forum for populist aesthetic pleasures or socio-political causes. It is in this sense that the concept of the hipster is caught up in age-old debates about the relation between ethics and aesthetics, examined here in terms of the dynamics of global contemporary art.
