Excerpt from Fifteenth Annual Report of the National Farm School: November, 1912 While our National Farm School is not a sectarian institution, and while its doors have always been open to applicants of any Jewish people faith, its special purpose has been to solve the sufferers from problems confronting such of our jewish people soft $2155 minn as live amid the squalor, the congestion, the um cities wholesomeness of our large cities. Our people are affected by the same laws that rule other people. They are oppressed by the same dire forces that weaken others. The influences of a vicious environment are apparent. Too few producers among them results in a shortage in the food supply and its consequent poverty and suffering. An unnatural manner of living results in a disregard for the decencies and privacies of life, which tends to breed immorality. The overcrowding in the cities brings upon them just that dire calamity that has recently become the disgrace and shame, not only of New York City, but also of the entire nation. Israel, that has maintained through the centuries a reputation for purity and morality, is shamed by the recent revelations in the Ghetto of New York. Excerpt from Twenty-Second Annual Report of the National Farm School: November, 1919 The introduction of, 'such a Girls' Annex would afford a splendid opportunity for some one philanthropically inclined. It would not involve a large expense. A farm conveniently near the Farm School grounds might be purchased, one supplied with a farmhouse large enough to accommodate several dozens of young women. Their instruction they would receive at the Farm School, where they would, likewise, take their meals. In charge of a com petent matron and assistants, the necessary discipline would be maintained. In addition, the presence of young women'of such high ideals as theirs, young women voluntarily seeking country life and farming pursuits, young women morally, mentally and physically healthy (as none other would be admitted), would prove a most desirable adjunct to the social life of the institution. The occasion is significant. It bears the palm of victory, a victory that rests in the consciousness that we are to - day witnessing the fulfilment Of a prophecy, dared by us when this Farm School was first projected, nineteen years ago. Yet, Short as has been the period of our existence, our years have been crowded with troubles and joys. Our joys are beginning now, but, in the years now happily gone, there were trou bles enough, some of them disheartening to the point of deep dis tress. Our undertaking was new. Few realized its value. The prophets of failure were many. And they not merely prophesied disaster, but also made their dire prophesies real by refusing their own aid and encouragement, and by discouraging others from coming to our support. Many a month's end found The National Farm School with empty treasury, yet with debts that had to be met from private purse. There were misrepresentations that could not be explained away, because those who made them stubbornly closed their eyes to all proofs to the contrary. The misrepresentations gained wide currency, and no words of ours, either by pen or mouth, could over take them.
