This is an intensive study of Indonesian politics from the attainment of full independence in December 1949 to the proclamation of martial law in March 1957, and President Soekarno's subsequent establishment of "guided democracy". It is intended as a contribution to the ongoing discussion of democracy in the new states of Asia and Africa, of the ways in which Western political institutions are transformed when employed in non-Western social settings, and of the obstacles to be overcome if such institutions are to operate in consonance with the authority systems of new nations and with their solution of economic and administrative problems. Now brought back into print as a member of Equinox Publishing's Classic Indonesia series, The Decline of Constitutional Democracy is considered to be the definitive study of Indonesia in the 1950s and will be of great interest to the growing number of social scientists concerned with the pre-industrial nations and in particular with their efforts to use and adapt Western political institutions. This is a solid and scholarly account, but, writing on the basis of much personal observation, Dr. Feith manages to present his material in such a way that readers with no previous background in the subject will be able to follow the book almost as easily as will specialists. HERBERT FEITH (1930-2001) became familiar with Indonesia during 1951-53 and 1954-56 when he was an English Language Assistant with the Ministry of Information of the Republic of Indonesia. A citizen of Australia, he received an M.A. degree from the University of Melbourne in 1955 and a Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1961. He was a Research Fellow in the Department of Pacific History, Australian National University, from 1960 to 1962 and was Chair of Politics at Monash University from 1968 until 1974.

The military is one of the few institutions that cut across the divides of Indonesian society. As it continues to play a critical part in determining Indonesia's future, the military itself is undergoing profound change. The authors of this book examine the role of the military in politics and society since the fall of President Suharto in 1998. They present several strategic scenarios for Indonesia, which have important implications for U.S.-Indonesian relations, and propose goals for Indonesian military reform and elements of a U.S. engagement policy.

Indonesia's future is highly uncertain. The collapse of former president Suharto's authoritarian "New Order" in 1998 made way for a political process that has led Indonesia on a path toward democracy, a development that is pregnant with possibilities. However, Indonesia's fragile democratic experiment is threatened by multiple crises. Despite the uncertainty surrounding Indonesia's future, some conditions can be expected to hold for the next several years. The country's recovering economy will remain fragile and vulnerable to external and internal shocks. Indonesia's political process will remain under stress. The role of Islam in politics-which goes back to the fundamental question of the nature of the Indonesian state-will continue to be a sensitive and potentially divisive issue. And the military, despite its formal subordination to civilian authority, will continue to play a key role in national security decisionmaking and will be an important influence on the country's political evolution.

The Transition To Guided Democracy written by Daniel S. Lev and has been published by Equinox Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with History categories.

Periods of major political transition are generally so complex as to present the political analyst with one of his most difficult challenges. Indonesia between 1957 and 1959 was no exception. During these years a previously wide diffusion of political power was superseded by its increasing concentration in three major bases: President Soekarno, the Army and the Communist Party. This was also a period of crisis in the relationships of Djakarta and Java with the other major islands of the archipelago; and it was marked by ideological ferment and change, largely dominated by the views of President Soekarno. It was during these years that Guided Democracy was given its initial shape, with the stage being set for a power struggle which was to become increasingly intense. So dramatic were the political experiences of this period and so deeply etched in the minds of many Indonesians that their effect is still strongly felt and can be expected to influence the character of Indonesia's political development for many years to come. Dr. Daniel S. Lev is particularly well qualified to examine the course of Indonesian political developments between 1957 and 1959. Arriving in Indonesia towards the end of this period, he remained there for three years engaged in an intensive study of its political life. His monograph constitutes by far the most searching analysis yet to appear of this critically important period. As well as providing a guide to these earlier formative years in the nation's political development, it will, I am sure, long remain relevant for all those seriously interested in understanding contemporary Indonesian political life. - George McT. Kahin, August 10, 1966

Processes of democratization and the struggle for democracy were a significant characteristic of political developments in most parts of the world in the late 1980s and early 1990s. This study examines the impact of these events in the minds and actions of those who struggle for democracy in Indonesia. Based on interviews with a large number of Indonesian pro-democracy activists as well as written material, the book contains a detailed analysis of the contemporary Indonesian pro-democracy movement and the political context in which it acts. Special attention is paid to the interesting connection between Indonesian Islam and democracy. The main focus is on how Indonesian pro-democracy actors draw lessons from events outside their country and adopt, adjust or reject foreign ideas. With its theoretical focus and detailed empirical analysis the book should be of interest for scholars and students of democracy and democratization as well as for those who are especially interested in Indonesian politics.

Despite challenges and problems in sustaining democratic norms and values, in the final analysis can it honestly be said that there is no better political system for Indonesia than Democracy? After more than eight years of political reform, it is necessary to analyze Indonesia's democratization process. This book offers coherent insights into recent Indonesian politics and provides a theoretically-based evaluation of the present situation, such as regard to the rule of law, the security sector, and the politics of identity. The question is raised and examined whether Churchill's famous quote about Democracy - being "the worst form of Government except all those others that have been tried from time to time" - holds true for Indonesia.

Despite being a major player in the ending of Soeharto's New Order regime in 1998, today the Indonesian pro-democracy movement is a marginal force in Indonesian politics and the process of reformasi is in the hands of other (elite) forces. Accordingly, there are some who now question if the quest to establish what would have been the world's third largest democracy is now a lost cause. This book represents a unique joint effort by concerned scholars and reflective activists to review and analyze the character, problems, and options facing the Indonesian pro-democracy movement. It is the first study to analyze why the pro-democracy movement failed to capitalize on its earlier successes and today is marginalized.

Indonesia has long been hailed as a rare case of democratic transition and persistence in an era of global democratic setbacks. But as the country enters its third decade of democracy, such laudatory assessments have become increasingly untenable. The stagnation that characterized Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's second presidential term has given way to a more far-reaching pattern of democratic regression under his successor, Joko Widodo. This volume is the first comprehensive study of Indonesia's contemporary democratic decline. Its contributors identify, explain and debate the signs of regression, including arbitrary state crackdowns on freedom of speech and organization, the rise of vigilantism, deepening political polarization, populist mobilization, the dysfunction of key democratic institutions, and the erosion of checks and balances on executive power. They ask why Indonesia, until recently considered a beacon of democratic exceptionalism, increasingly conforms to the global pattern of democracy in retreat.
