Fighting sports may seem at odds with Christian tradition, yet modern ministries have embraced them as a means for evangelism and social outreach. While news media often sensationalize fighting sports, churches see them as a way to appeal to male congregants, presenting a peace-loving yet tough model of discipleship. From martial arts programs at suburban churches to urban boxing ministries geared towards at-risk youth, this book examines the substantial history of church sponsored training in combat sports, and presents arguments by Christian ethicists about their compatibility with church teachings and settings. Interviews with boxing and martial arts ministry leaders describe their programs and the relationship between fight sports and faith.

Fresh new perspectives on the study of religion, ranging from SoulCycle to Mark Twain American Examples: New Conversations about Religion, Volume Two, is the second in a series of annual anthologies produced by the American Examples workshop hosted by the Department of Religious Studies at The University of Alabama. In the latest volume from this dynamic academic project, nine scholars with diverse topics and methodologies vividly reimagine the meaning of all three words in the phrase “American religious history.” The essays use case studies from America, broadly conceived, to ask trenchant theoretical questions that are of interest to scholars and students beyond the subfield of American religious history. Cody Musselman uses a Weberian analysis to explore questions of identity, authority, and authenticity in the world of SoulCycle while Zachary T. Smith finds commonality between the rhetoric and practices of scholarship and mixed martial arts. Erik Kline provides a new perspective on the psychedelic mysticism of the 1960s, and Brook Wilensky-Lanford takes stock of the cultural power of parody in Mark Twain’s last work of fiction. Christopher Cannon Jones examines the reciprocal relationship between religious texts and cultural contexts by comparing early Mormon missions to Hawai‘i and Jamaica and Lindsey Jackson explores what debates over circumcision can tell us about gender stereotypes and motherhood. Dana Lloyd uses the 1988 Supreme Court decision in Lyng v. Northwest Indian Cemetery Protective Association as a case study in order to consider how Indigenous religion and sovereignty have been understood and adjudicated in the American legal system. Matt Sheedy studies the identity categories of “atheist” and “ex-Muslim” and Brad Stoddard uses ethnographic fieldwork to evaluate the role of religious pluralism in regulating and policing correctional institutions. Editors Samah Choudhury and Prea Persaud provide an introduction that reconsiders the trajectory of the American Examples project in light of the siege on the US Capitol in January 2021 and the continuing COVID pandemic. Religion And Sport In North America written by Jeffrey Scholes and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-09-13 with Sports & Recreation categories.

From athletes praising God to pastors using sport metaphors in the pulpit, the association between sport and religion in North America is often considered incidental. Yet religion and sport have been tightly intertwined for millennia and continue to inform, shape, and critique one another. Moreover, sport, rather than being a solely secular activity, is one of the most important sites for debates over gender, race, capitalism, the media, and civil religion. Traditionally, scholarly writings on religion and sport have focused on the question of whether sport is a religion, using historical, philosophical, theological, and sociological insights to argue this matter. While these efforts sought to answer an important question, contemporary issues related to sports were neglected, such as globalization, commercialization, feminism, masculinity, critical race theory, and the ethics of doping. This volume contains lively, up-to-date essays from leading figures in the field to fill this scholarly gap. It treats religion as an indispensable prism through which to view sports, and vice versa. This book is ideal for students approaching the topic of religion and sport. It will also be of interest to scholars studying sociology of religion, sociology of sport, religion and race, religion and gender, religion and politics, and sport in general.

Throughout America's past, some men have feared the descent of their gender into effeminacy, and turned their eyes to the ring in hopes of salvation. This work explains how the dominant fight sports in the United States have changed over time in response to broad shifts in American culture and ideals of manhood, and presents a narrative of American history as seen from the bars, gyms, stadiums and living rooms of the heartland. Ordinary Americans were the agents who supported and participated in fight sports and determined its vision of masculinity. This work counters the economic determinism prevalent in studies of American fight sports, which overemphasize profit as the driving force in the popularization of these sports. The author also disputes previous scholarship's domestic focus, with an appreciation of how American fight sports are connected to the rest of the world.

There are books on how to worship God with our marriages, our money, and our sex lives. Books on how to “think biblically” about movies, television, and the arts. Books on how to vote Christianly and how not to vote Christianly. But there is little thoughtful, Christ-centered writing on the subject that drives most of men’s banter with each other and consumes the bulk of their free time- Sports. Written in the vein of Rick Reilly (Sports Illustrated), Chuck Klosterman (Spin, Esquire), and David Foster Wallace (A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again), The Reason for Sports will both entertain and shed light on some of today’s most pertinent sports issues (race, drugs, hero worship, and more)- all through a biblical lens.e drowns puppies, or that you should cheer for all American QB Tim Tebow because he etches a Bible verse on his eye-black before every game. I’ll let you draw your own conclusions about all of these people. But I’ll invite you to begin formulating your own theology of sports with me.

San Francisco Bay Area Sports brings together fifteen essays covering the issues, controversies, and personalities that have emerged as northern Californians recreated and competed over the last 150 years. The area’s diversity, anti-establishment leanings, and unique and beautiful natural surroundings are explored in the context of a dynamic sporting past that includes events broadcast to millions or activities engaged in by just a few. Professional and college events are covered along with lesser-known entities such as Oakland’s public parks, tennis player and Bay Area native Rosie Casals, environmentalism and hiking in Marin County, and the origins of the Gay Games. Taken as a whole, this book clarifies how sport is connected to identities based on sexuality, gender, race, and ethnicity. Just as crucial, the stories here illuminate how sport and recreation can potentially create transgressive spaces, particularity in a place known for its nonconformity.

History repeats. Gladiators Arising: Blood-Bought vs. Blood Sport examines the resurgence of blood sports in the world today and its infiltration into the church. Historians are calling on people not to be comforted in the false assumption that gladiatorial fights could never happen again. Yet, it is realized that the neo-gladiators of Mixed Martial Arts have already arisen. This book walks through the corridors of time and takes a panoramic historical view of the early church’s collision with gladiators and its ultimate victory. The exploding concussion crisis makes this a timely book and the uncomfortable realities need a biblical response. Gladiators Arising demonstrates the early church’s success in piercing the darkness with the Light of Christ. It was through loving those created in His image and sharing the Gospel no matter the cost that changed the course of history. The cross today, standing within the weathered Roman Colosseum, beckons us to remember the past, understand the present, and prepare for the future.

The Spirit of Victory is a sports devotional that brings together the passions of three authors for one purpose: to share the love of Jesus and the Word of God in a deeper, relevant way with athletes and sports fans. Each author dives deep into the Word using sport and the Olympics as the vehicle to point to Jesus and the transforming power of the Gospel. Whether you are a sports lover interested in who Jesus is, or, a Christian exploring how God works in His world. This devotional aims to help in two ways. Deeper knowledge of God, using the Olympics Firstly, the Bible passages unpacked in this devotional help strengthen our relationship with God. Each devotional unpacks a Bible verse that reveals a God with whom we wrestle. A God that encourages us to keep walking forward in our faith and a God of grace. The primary way God reveals Himself is through the Bible. The Bible is 'God breathed' and we want to be faithful to the Biblical text. It is this text that has the power to work hand-in-glove with the Spirit to change lives. As a result, Jeremy Dover has partnered with two other Pastors to produce a devotional that aims to unpack the message of Jesus, using sport as the vehicle: The Spirit of Victory. Deeper faith using the Olympics God is interested in every aspect of life, including sport. The Bible has many examples of sport that help us develop a richer relationship with God. The Games allow us to do what the Bible does often: to transpose the temporary challenges we see in sport and our lives to a spiritual level. For example. When we watch Olympic boxing we are to see beyond the physical. To a different kind of fight: the spiritual battles won by Jesus. This book brings together three authors who love Jesus, who have studied and written about the Bible over many years, who have served in ministry, including within sport. Church of Christ Pastors, Travis Barnes and Peter Nelson have contributed chapters to the project, along with Jeremy Dover. Jeremy Dover is a former sports scientist, Pastor and is a contributor to Christian Today Australia as a sports writer. Barnes has been a Pastor in Central Victoria and regular sports journalist and writer for Christian Today, Australia. Nelson was Pastor in several Canberra Churches. Nelson was also chaplain at the Australian Institute of Sport and several Olympic Games. Their experience in exploring the Bible and understanding sport within our culture has produced some fascinating chapters. Their desire, as authors, is to point to this Gospel of grace from these Bible passages. Discovering the true God of the Olympics This devotional has a focus of bringing you, the reader, into God's Word using sport and the Olympics as the vehicle to point you to Jesus.
