Uno dei protagonisti è un personaggio sui generis: sembra derivato quasi dalla preistoria addirittura, carico e prigioniero com’è, di ingenue e “ferine” consuetudini di vita. Eppure egli costituisce il leitmotiv, dall’inizio alla fine, di tutto il testo: è silente spettatore interessato e testimone passivo dell’intera vicenda. L’altra protagonista è una bambina che diventa donna attraverso molteplici e diverse esperienze. Da tutto ciò scaturiscono non solo un confronto generazionale di vita, ma soprattutto, una vasta disamina sull’amore, tratteggiato in molteplici e differenti aspetti, distribuiti nel tempo. Tutti i personaggi, piccoli, medi e grandi, vengono ben presentati e delineati in funzione del dipanarsi dell’intera vicenda. Si può quindi constatare come tutti, nel loro interagire, costituiscano, per così dire, le tessere di un vasto mosaico sull’amore: ognuna di esse occupa uno spazio ben preciso e svolge una specifica funzione. Perciò l’intento sottinteso dell’autore è sostanzialmente quello di far riflettere il lettore sull’amore, sulle sue funzioni e sul suo diversificato valore, attraverso la coniunctio oppositorum dei sentimenti. In definitiva, dopo lo sfogo repentino del primo romanzo (scritto in poco più di un mese), in questo suo secondo, Stefano rivela una sapiente e minuziosa regia di costruzione e armonizzazione delle vicende, come il serpente che si morde la coda, dimostrando la raggiunta maturità di scrittore. Nel 1865 furono emanate le leggi di unificazione amministrativa del Regno d’Italia. In occasione del centocinquantenario, il Dipartimento di Scienze Giuridiche dell’Università di Firenze ha organizzato un progetto di studi sulle trasformazioni che nell’ultimo cinquantennio hanno interessato gli apparati e le attività dell’amministrazione della Repubblica, vista nel suo articolato governo locale e nella sua appartenenza all’Unione europea. Le ricerche hanno coinvolto, nell’arco di quasi due anni, più di centocinquanta studiosi di Università italiane. Il bisogno di comprendere come il fascismo avesse potuto nell’arco di pochi anni, non solo vincere ma instaurare un regime totalitario antiparlamentare, reprimendo con la violenza opposizioni e dissensi è quello che colpisce in una provincia qual è il viterbese. Di conseguenza anche un grande interesse verso il Partito Comunista, che in quegli anni, attorno al 1921-1943, era ben attivo in Provincia come dimostrano i ricordi degli iscritti dell’epoca e le sentenze del Tribunale speciale per la difesa dello Stato, e del ruolo che successivamente hanno svolto le varie organizzazioni comuniste nella Resistenza. La Tuscia fu soprattutto un grande centro di resistenza attiva, passiva e umanitaria, sopportata con dignità, assai spesso al limite della sofferenza e del sacrificio, in un diffuso spirito di solidarietà fra tutti gli strati della popolazione. Sono vicende di persone, anonimi fascisti, antifascisti, comunisti e partigiani, con nomi e gesta che vanno ad integrare quanto raccontato nel primo volume di «Storie dimenticate», che presero parte alla lotta contro il fascismo e al movimento di liberazione in diverse maniere, a seconda dell’età, delle loro attitudini, della loro storia personale. Una storia fatta di episodi, di aneddoti molti dei quali sconosciuti ai più; una storia di uomini e di donne che ruota intorno al fascismo e all’antifascismo. Una nuova tappa, quindi, sulla via per la completa “esplorazione” antifascista e resistenziale della provincia.
